The Appeal

It’s impossible to overstate the societal impact of the Volkswagen Beetle. What’s so remarkable about the world’s favourite people’s car, is that in spite of its simplicity, the Beetle was and remains wholly unconventional. With an air-cooled flat-four engine situated aft and a strong curved bodyshell, a staggering 21.5 million Beetles were sold and they remain popular classics to this day.

Here we have a well preserved 1964 example that we’re informed was restored some years ago. Finished in a striking shade of purple, this Beetle is in very good condition for its age, with some attractive patina that it has accrued in recent years. It’s well presented inside and out, with smart upholstery, straight bodywork and a seemingly solid chassis. If you’re looking for a classic Volkswagen, we think this desirable early example would be a great option.

  • The door cards and trims all look to be in really good order for their age
  • Period correct steering wheel, pedals and gear lever
  • While it has a few marks, the headlining has survived really well
  • The oatmeal carpeting would benefit from a clean but remains quite usable

The Exterior

  • Desirable model with the slanted headlamps
  • Repainted purple at some point in its life
  • The paintwork has begun to fade and crack in places, but remains fairly presentable overall
  • Besides some very light surface rust starting to appear in places such as the leading edge of the bonnet, the car presents really well overall
  • Straight bodywork, with relatively few imperfections and not notable damage
  • All the trim pieces and lights look in good order
  • Smart chrome, with a light patination but no excessive pitting
  • The underside looks really sound, with no serious corrosion in evidence
  • Steel wheels painted in body colour and complete with hubcaps

The Mechanics

  • 1300 cc air-cooled flat-four
  • Four-speed manual gearbox
  • Originally equipped with a 1200 cc engine
  • Presents quite well under the engine hatch
  • The fan shroud and tinwear have been painted yellow and the air filter has been finished in body colour
  • The vendor reports that it runs well and drives without issue
  • Current ITV, so ready to use

These early ‘60s Beetles are becoming increasingly sought after and it’s somewhat unusual to find such solid examples as this. Whether you’re looking for a patinated usable classic, or else the basis for a rolling restoration, we think this would be a great candidate.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.
Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

C&C prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.
Auctions are extended by 3-minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £10,000 £100.00
£10,000 to £50,000 £250.00
£50,000 to £100,000 £500.00
£100,000+ £1000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.
You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you’re able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
