The Appeal
The original Mustang was a symbol of escape and freedom. An obvious choice, then, when the producers of the hit series The Walking Dead wanted to portray the same idea. They chose a Mustang, a yellow one and, specifically, this one.
This car featured heavily in the early seasons of the show, particularly Season 2, and is considered a key part of the film’s lore. Diecast models have been produced to celebrate it, several of which are included with the sale.
The car itself looks perhaps as you might expect a car that’s survived the apocalypse to look like. It remains exactly as it left the Hollywood film lot, including the famous windscreen wording. The condition is ‘aged’, but with a car this significant, a restoration is probably out of the question. It is fitted with Ford’s 289CI V8 and the C4 auto box. Some engine parts are missing, and it does not run, which is an area where the buyer might want to make some changes.
The current keeper acquired the car from a Mustang dealer. He relocated it to Spain to add to his private collection, where it has been stored in a dry indoor environment. The car is said to carry UK and Spanish registration documents, so it could be relocated if the buyer wishes.
The vendor says:
“This is not simply a classic car, but a genuine piece of television history. A screen-used 1967 Ford Mustang Coupe from The Walking Dead, one of the most influential and widely recognised series of modern times. Its distinctive yellow, weathered appearance remains exactly as seen on screen, capturing the raw, post-apocalyptic atmosphere of the show in a way that cannot be convincingly recreated once lost. A notarised certificate of authenticity is included, confirming its provenance.
“The car is also accompanied by two Greenlight Collectibles scale models, produced as part of their officially licensed Hollywood series — typically reserved for the most recognisable and culturally significant vehicles in film and television. This vehicle is directly linked to one of the most emotional moments in the series — the search for Sophia. The handwritten message on the car: “Sophia stay here, we will come every day” became a symbol of hope, humanity and resilience. Even in a world that had collapsed, it reflected the idea that people still cared, still searched, and still refused to give up. As expected for a vehicle of this age and nature, it will require mechanical recommissioning and restoration work. However, it represents a rare opportunity to acquire and preserve an authentic, screen-used vehicle with genuine cultural and collector significance.”
History and Paperwork
- First registered in 1967
- Certificate of authenticity from film producers confirming provenance
- Imported with all duties and taxes fully paid within both Europe and the UK
- Currently located in Spain
- Two officially licensed Greenlight Collectibles scale models included
- Acquired by seller from a Mustang specialist
- Stored indoors as part of a private collection
The vendor says:
“This car was acquired from a Mustang specialist, ensuring strong provenance from the outset. It immediately stood out due to its unique status as a genuine screen-used vehicle from The Walking Dead, with direct links to its use during filming. The vehicle was originally imported to the UK by the Mustang specialist, and was subsequently imported to Spain by myself, with all import duties and taxes paid. Since acquisition, it has been carefully stored indoors as part of a private collection. No restoration work has been carried out, preserving its originality and on-screen character. I would be happy to assist the buyer with shipping arrangements if required, including putting them in contact with a trusted transport provider familiar with UK and European deliveries.”
The Condition
- Remains as it was featured in the film with sun faded yellow paintwork
- Features the "Sophia stay here, we will come every day" message from the series
- Damage to rear driver’s side of car and other bodywork marks as shown
- Boot floor missing and the underside shows corrosion
- Two-tone blue interior showing signs of age and sun exposure
- Vendor states that the interior is largely intact
- The vendor describes the interior as a good basis for refurbishment
- Front floor section requires repair or replacement
- General restoration work is required before the car can return to the road
- Vendor notes authentic, aged exterior appearance cannot be convincingly recreated once lost
The vendor says:
“The car retains its unmistakable “apocalyptic” appearance exactly as seen on screen — a defining part of its identity and value. This is not simply wear, but part of the car’s story. Restoring the exterior would remove what makes this vehicle truly unique. The underside is generally solid; however, the front floor pans will require replacement due to corrosion. As expected from a genuine filming vehicle, some mechanical components are missing.
“The interior is partially complete and retains its original two-tone blue colour scheme. However, it shows significant wear, including sun damage, and some components are missing. As a result, it will require restoration and reassembly. This presents an opportunity for the next owner to refurbish the interior to their desired level while preserving the car’s authenticity.”
The Mechanics
- Ford 4.7L 289 V8 engine
- C4 automatic transmission
- Some mechanical parts missing so the car does not run
- Vendor states that the engine turns and is not seized
- Mechanical recommissioning is required before the car can return to the road
The vendor says:
“The car is equipped with a 289ci V8 engine paired with a C4 automatic transmission — a desirable and correct classic Mustang configuration. The engine turns freely, confirming it is not seized. However, some components are missing, and the car is not currently in running condition. A full mechanical recommissioning will be required before returning to the road.”
