At the Milan show of 1971 Moto Guzzi unveiled the new 850 GT and, with it, the 850 GT California, thus commencing a long line of motorcycling heritage that continues to the present day. The thinking behind the California theme was to rival Harley's "American dream" mystique which had been so successful and to tap into the imagery of touring freely in sunshine on endless highways through dramatic scenery. In 1987 the California III was introduced, with full injection in 1989 from the Daytona. The LAPD (Los Angeles Police Department) version is a homage to the original California that was designed in consultation with the Los Angeles Police Department Traffic Division to replace the department's Moto Guzzi V7s. It originally had a left-foot gearshift, a bulletproof Lexan windshield and a sprung side stand, along with the requisite siren, radio, extra police lights, and a standing quarter mile of under 16 seconds. This well cared for carburettor example was first registered on the 14th September 1992 and sold in the July of 1993 to a Doctor Clifford of Louth in Lincolnshire before being sold to the previous vendor in the March of 1996. After long term ownership and self servicing, the mileage is now only some 16, 000 miles. The only stated alteration from new is the fitting of a Rita Lucas ignition system. Purchased in these rooms on the 4th March 2017, it has not been used and is now being offered for auction again with a new MOT.
