The P6 was launched in 1963 and promptly won car of the year. It was an advanced design with panels that bolted onto a base unit, disc brakes on all four wheels and de-dion tube rear suspension. The single carburettor version was joined by the TC in 1966 and then in 1968 Rover installed a modified version of the lightweight “Buick” 3500 V8. The manual “S” version had a top speed of over 120mph, a 0-60 time of 10 seconds and 24mpg economy.
This car is a 1972 Rover P6 3500S in its original colour of Davos White. It was supplied new by Mann Egerton of Kings Lynn to the “Dowager Marchiness of Cholmonley of Houghton” who kept it for 14 years before selling it back to them. It is still fitted with their original number plates. The second owner, also in Kings Lynn was a public-school headmaster and more recently it has been in the same family for over 20 years.
It is fitted with ET front head rests, power steering and black “flat pleat” leather which may have been a special order as box-pleat leather was fitted to most cars from 1971. As you can see from the photos it is in outstanding condition.
The mileage is correct at just 77, 000 but it has seen little use over the last few years so we have just completed a comprehensive re-commissioning and several test miles. It has just been fitted with a new brake servo, clutch slave cylinder, battery, electric fuel pump (Huco), new oil and filter and fuel filter and various other parts and is now running and driving beautifully.
The upper body and paint finish are excellent, the panels are as far as we can see, all original and the underside is as good as we have seen on a P6 over the years. There is an invoice in the history file from 1991 for two small repairs, inner sill to floor but they take some finding and other than that there are no visible signs of welding or repair work. This is clearly a car that has always been garaged and the vinyl roof is in perfect order. The interior is also in remarkable, original condition. The engine is smooth and sweet with strong oil pressure and the 4 speed manual gearbox is precise and free from noises.
