The Rover P4 was produced from 1948 until 1964. They have always been thought of as a thing of old-fashioned quality but it’s easy to forget how the startlingly modern styling offended some conservative tastes back in 1948. Eventually they became widely loved and it’s testimony to the devotion of Rover buyers that the car remained in production for a full six years after the launch of the P5.

This car is a 1959 Rover 100 saloon in Shadow green. The mileage reading is 48, 000 which is almost certainly correct. We bought it from the son of the man who owned it since 1964 and it was in the same Gloucestershire town from new until 2017. It was little used through the 80’s and dry stored until 1990 when “Ely Services” carried out a complete body and mechanical restoration, at a cost back then of over £10k. Since then it has been used sparingly covering less than 20, 000 miles in the last 27 years. We first bought, then sold this Rover in 2017 and we have just bought it back from our customer. It was a reluctant sale due to a change in personal circumstances. In 2017 we carried out some re-commissioning work and various new parts have recently been fitted including a radiator, hoses and an engine service. The underside is in excellent, solid order and the upper body is in fine condition. There is a little “patina” to the interior but it is generally very good.

This Rover is one of the best P4’s that we have owned; it runs and drives beautifully with a quiet engine, strong brakes and positive gear-change. There are various minor imperfections as you would expect from a car that was last painted nearly 30 years ago but it is a world away from the shiny but bodged up examples out there. It comes with a comprehensive history file containing bills and old MOT’s, restoration photos, original sales brochure, workshop manuals, marque books and the bill of sale to the long term owner from 1964. It still carries its original registration number and is fitted with an original, working 1960’s “Pye” radio. Matching radial tyres are fitted and electronic ignition.

An outstanding and imposing Rover saloon with excellent provenance for the price of a Morris Minor!
