One of the world's best-loved entertainers, the late Charles Aznavour was hailed by French President Emmanuel Macron as one of the most important 'faces of France' at the singer's state funeral in Paris in October 2018. Born Shahnour Vaghinag Aznavourian on 22nd May 1924, the Franco-Armenian Aznavour was one of his country's most popular and enduring singers, selling 180 million records during his lifetime and earning himself the title of 'France's Frank Sinatra'.

It is not known what prompted Charles Aznavour to buy this Vanden Plas Princess, though most probably it was its unique combination of modernity and tradition. One of the most illustrious of Britain's coachbuilders, chiefly remembered for its sublime Vintage-era Bentleys, the firm of Vanden Plas had been acquired by BMC in 1946 and reinvented as a marque in its own right some years later. In the 1960s and '70s the name was applied to top-of-the-range versions of Austin-Morris models, most notably the advanced front-wheel-drive 1100/ 1300. Vanden Plas in London re-equipped the car with the kind of luxurious interior long associated with the firm, using plentiful wood-veneer trim and leather upholstery together with a distinctive grille and their own badging. The engine specified was the same twin-carburettor unit fitted to the MG 1100/ 1300, the 1. 3-litre 65bhp version being good enough for a top speed of 90mph. Today the Vanden Plas is by far the most collectible of the 1100/ 1300 family and is highly sought after.

Finished in brown/ black with beige interior, this ex-Aznavour example is presented in 'barn find' condition (the engine starts and runs). The current vendor bought the car 15 years ago while it was stored at Aznavour's sister's castle: Chateau de Bourdonn? in Bourdonn?, France. The present owner never registered the car and has never driven it, so probably the last person to do so was Charles Aznavour himself.

Still registered with its original plates - '5122 GA 78' ? the car comes with the original Carte Grise in the name of 'Charles Aznavourian'; the receipt recording its sale by Charles Aznavour to the current vendor; and an autograph given to the latter by Charles Aznavour.

Autrefois propri?t? de Charles Aznavour
Vanden Plas Princess 1100 berline 1966
Ch?ssis n? V16S 11260

(moteur tournant)
?M?me propri?taire depuis 15 ans
?Achet?e ? Charles Aznavour
