The P6 or Rover 2000 was launched in 1963 and promptly won car of the year. It was an advanced design with panels that bolted on to a base unit, disc brakes on all four wheels and de-dion tube rear suspension. The SC version was capable of over 100mph and quickly gained a reputation for strength and reliability – in the 60’s Rover struggled to meet demand; they aimed for production of 250 cars per week but by 1965 were producing more than 800.
Here we have a very interesting P6. It was bought new in 1966 as an export car in Nairobi, Kenya and was re-imported in 1970 by its one and only British owner, now deceased. It is finished in April Yellow and we can see no evidence of a colour change but confusingly, this colour was only available on UK cars in 1968 and 1969.
It is best described as a light project. The upper body is in generally very good order and would respond well to a machine polish and touch in here and there - there are a couple of small blisters on the bottom of both off-side doors, one on the bonnet and two of the door bottoms on the inside will need a tidy up. There is a little rot in both rear “D” posts inside the back doors but this could easily be remedied and the underside is in very solid order although it has had some welding over the years. The engine runs very sweetly with no smoke, the clutch and brakes are working well and the gearbox is sweet and quiet. Fresh oil and a new set of plugs have recently been fitted and we have carried out a few test miles after a long period of little use. All of the instruments are working as they should and the interior trim is original if a little worn.
Early series one cars are becoming hard to find. This one is ideal if you are looking for a car that can be used and improved and represents superb value at less than the price of a Morris Minor in similar condition. It comes with original handbooks and a small leather bound book detailing every fill up and maintenance for the early part of its life and other information about the car including its registered number in Nairobi. The V5 is missing and will need to be applied for but it is on the DVLA system as a one owner car and we will provide a sales invoice. We are selling this car on behalf of the beneficiary and the sales proceeds after expenses are going to charity.
