1928 DELAGE DISS Sports Four Seat Special Tourer
A wonderful 91 year old motorcar, French blue and tan leather trim and hood. This beautiful vintage running example includes two famous ex owners and has 53000 miles showing on the speedo. It was originally owned by the famous racing motorcyclist Stanley Woods – Isle of Man TT race winner x 10 and 29 Grand Prix wins until 1946. Then sold to Mr Wilkinson followed by Mr Hall of Croydon, after which Mr Minifie owned the car 1961-1966 finally selling it to Lady Valerie Guinness. The car remained in the famous Guinness family until recently. Delage was hugely respected as motor car manufacturer in 1900s, producing exotic racers and refined tourers, until the factory closed 1953. Few cars still exist, making this a rare car indeed. It is right hand drive, road tax and MOT exempt. Registration number YV2754, chassis 24714.
Originally a Weymann fabric bodied International saloon the car was transformed mid 50’s to a sporting four seater aluminium Sport Tourer, quite a common occurrence at the time. Weymann was a small French Coachbuilder but their car bodies were weak and soon distorted, hence the transformation to a sporting four seater. Later in the 1950s, a new engine was fitted and the Austin A70 engine was chosen for its weight, looks and performance. The Delage Owners Club advises the chassis, axels and gearbox seem to be original, however the front shock absorbers have been changed.
Features: King of the Road period headlamps, wing mirror, soft top and hood cover, badge bar with Delage Owners badge, engineer turned dashboard and 20 inch wire wheels. History folder includes: current and previous V5s, photocopy of the original buff logbook, Spring 1968 copy of VSCC Delage Register Journal in which this car is listed, previous MoT certificates which seem to confirm 53000 miles, MOT related docs, DVLA correspondence, old tax discs, images of the car, Owners Handbook, Guinness family and other correspondence, write ups, lubrication chart, insurance docs, invoices and a 2013 David Crawford book entitled Stanley Woods – The World First Motorcycle Superstar. His beloved Delage is highlighted in its Saloon format on page 71. Interestingly, the foreword is written by another famous motorcyclist – Sammy Miller MBE.
This car is in an eminently drivable but delightfully original and unmolested condition, worthy of a vintage car collection, museum or vintage car rallying.
