1978 MK1 Mitsubishi Colt Sapporo GSL pillar-less coupe. I’ve owned this lovely car for 8 years and enjoyed bringing it back to life after a 20 year slumber in a garage. Sad to be writing this but equally excited for another toy. Can’t keep them all!
This Sapporo is one of about six MK1’s still running in the UK. You’re unlikely to bump into another. It drives really well and goes through the gears fine. With brake discs all round and power steering, it’s quite ‘modern’ for a 70’s car and is easy to live with. Cosmetically the car is really good and as shiny as the photos make out. It will have had some paint in 40 years but has not been resprayed. Vinyl roof is tidy. This is an authentic old car so there’s a few marks as per age. Overall it’s in lovely condition. There is no rot underneath and I cannot see any evidence of previous welding.
The grey cloth interior is good and all the dials work. Digital clock in the roof. The original AM radio is present with a single speaker in the dash. I’ve added a hidden USB/ AUX/ FM radio which runs to some rear speakers and can be controlled by remote. It has a beige Sapporo steering wheel as the original went sticky. I’m sure it could be colour coded or perhaps swap it for a period wooden wheel.
In 2012 I replaced the tyres, backbox, ignition related items, suspension boots and aux belt. The carb was rebuilt. All fluids were changed and the radiator re-cored. The engine is chain driven. Service parts are still available and the mechanicals are shared with Mitsubishi’s from the time – Galant, Starion, Lancer, Celeste etc. I have a bit of history, some MOT’s, manual, brochure and parts catalogue.
I’ve taken it on a few long trips and it’s never let me down. I attend the Japanese car show at Beaulieu in Hampshire which is a 200 mile round trip.
Like any old car it has age relate wear and the odd quirk. The autochoke needs a few seconds to balance itself before setting off when cold and I keep the tank above 1/ 4.
