We are delighted to present for sale this smart Series 2 hard top, with the popular 200TDI conversion fitted. As can be seen from the photographs, this vehicle came from a good home, where it was well loved and cared for. This has resulted in a vehicle that is both good to look at and easy to live with.
Externally, the bodywork is in good order and of a spray type finish. There are all the usual period features to enjoy, such as the mudflaps, front lifting eyes, rear grabhandles, bonnet mounted spare, galvanised bonnet clasps, wing mounted mirrors, rear lamp guards etc. There is also a towbar and electrics, ideal for those jobs involving towing at the weekend! There is also a working rear lamp, ideal for those winter evenings or for extra visibility. The vehicle sits on a set of recent Michelin XLR tyres, which are widely used in the military due to their excellent off-road capability whilst maintaining a good ride on the road. All in all, we feel that this vehicle is very easy on the eye and looks the part.
Internally, the well sorted feel continues – three front deluxe seats are fitted, with the outer seats being of the highback type with integrated headrests. It is nice to see the original steering wheel survives with the horn on the stalk, twin individual wipers, and a Clayton heater with front demist. Deluxe matting is fitted to the front footwells. The dash survives in good order and looks just as it should. The rear houses twin bench seats, increasing seating to seven occupants including the driver. A load mat is fitted to the floor area. Rear windows could be fitted for £495, to give a station wagon effect. Once again, we feel the interior presentation demonstrates a good home from which it came.
Out on the road, the 200TDI engine is a welcome power and economy improvement over the period engine setup. The addition of the overdrive gives longer in-gear acceleration and a quieter cruising experience, at a higher speed. The parabolic springs aid with on-road comfort, giving a more compliant ride and the marriage of all these upgrades results in a vehicle which may look period, but which performs well above what one might expect of a Classic Land Rover®! The engine, overdrive and free wheeling hubs combine to make a powerful yet frugal vehicle.
In summary, if you are looking for a Series 2 that looks the part, but without the drawbacks of a classic motoring experience, then this could be for you. With MOT & Tax Exemption and classic insurance, it should prove cheap to run in the long term, especially bearing in mind the engine setup for improved economy. In places where a soft-top is either not practical or secure enough, this hard top model with all locking doors proves to be the best compromise.
