It’s remarkable to think that 92 years ago when this Swallow first hit the road it was designed as a four-seater!! Not only have car designs changed out of all recognition but so have our bodies. Like cars, they have got bigger. Little is known about PK’s early history apart from the fact that it was first registered on the 19th of Oct 1928. Swallows sales brochure from the time makes interesting reading.
“Now a full four-seater, the Austin Swallow Sports Saloon provides ample room for four adults. This is a noteworthy achievement which, coupled with the exclusive distinction and refinement of the body, makes an irresistible appeal to discriminating motorists. Many unique features have been added, such as bumpers, concealed blind, etc, all harmonizing to create one of the most outstanding small cars of the generation.”
The beautiful example at CMC, resplendent in Apple Green and Cream, has been, according to its owner, the longest restoration of any car in his collection.
Bought as a barn find in 2002, it finally saw the light of day 17 years later.
No expense was spared in bringing this little gem back to life. Many aspects of the car including bumpers, air vents, window mechanisms had to be specially commissioned.
The Jaguar Heritage Trust kindly loaned their highly original example to CMC so that they could be sure to get the details right.
In 1928 the Swallow cost £187, which today would be equivalent to about £12, 000, according to the Office of National Statistics composite price index.
