We are delighted to present for sale this Series 3 Land Rover®, which benefits from a galvanised chassis rebuild. Based on the paperwork with the vehicle, it would appear that it was rebuilt in 2016 – there are bills supporting this and also old MOTs stretching back to the mid-1990s, which is nice to see. This means, we are in the almost unheard of position where we can confirm the mileage of the vehicle to be accurate and correct, despite the engine rebuild.
The exterior of the vehicle is largely standard, with a bonnet mounted matching spare fitted, rear grab handles and mud flaps, and deluxe bonnet. There are larger defender-style door mirrors to afford the driver better visibility and a towball and electrics to allow use when towing. The vehicle sits on a set of our 750 tyres mounted to the steel rims – these give both better gearing ratios and are also self-cleaning, as well as giving a positive stance. It is also good to see that the original galvanised cappings survive. We think the combination of all these features make for a good looking, period Series 3, whilst maintaining tasteful and useful upgrades more suited to modern road use.
The interior is largely standard, with 3 standard front seats, with deluxe matting to the footwells. There is a seat belt bar fitted with 3 point inertia reel belts for the driver and passenger – a nice and desirable feature. The rear is unfitted, with the exception of a load mat to the rear floor. The rear could house bench seats on request for £350 – this would increase seating from 3 occupants to 7 including the driver. It is pleasing to note there is also a spare set of keys in the paperwork, which is a rarity to see.
Out on the road, this Series 3 gives a great account of itself – the remanufactured Turner Engineering engine is a very quiet and strong unit – it pulls well to speed, aided by the larger tyres to reduce RPM’s and increase cruising speed. This may also be due to the low mileage of this example – it really is one of the nicest we’ve seen for some time, both out on the road and on tickover. The added bonus of an overdrive makes the cruise quieter too, and also allows to keep with modern traffic more easily. The parabolic springs and uprated shock absorbers give a much improved ride over standard. It delivers a much enhanced period drive, and can handle modern traffic much more comfortably. In the period engined format, this is about as versatile as these Series 3s can be.
In summary, if you are looking for a rebuilt Series 3 88?, then this is well worth considering. With the bonus of classic insurance and upcoming MOT and tax exemption in 2023, it should prove cheap to run long term – whilst the modern upgrades underneath mean that the driving experience is far superior to that of a normal Series 3. The added bonus of the galvanised chassis also means that long-term ownership will be less hassle than a mild steel variant.
