At the time of its debut in 2003, the Gallardo was positioned right below the Murcilago, the top model of the Sant’Agata Bolognese era.
Compared to the top model, however, the Gallardo is more manageable and with wider rear visibility and is proposed to the market as a sports car that can be used more easily in city traffic and, in general, easier to drive than the Murcilago.
The Gallardo is equipped with a 500 hp Lamborghini V10 engine, which was subsequently raised to 520 hp with the arrival of the Spider version and permanent all-wheel drive with central viscous joint (Viscous Traction) which it shares with its older sister Murciélago.
On the other hand, Lamborghini's primary objective was clear from the start: to undermine the Ferrari "360 Modena", both in terms of performance and ease of use.
In 2004 Lamborghini donated two Gallardos equipped with semi-automatic defibrillator and refrigerated container for the transport of organs to the State Police and in 2008 another two of the new generation. The Gallardo went out of production in 2013 after 14, 022 units produced.
