Beschreibung
Classic 1975 VW Bay Window Campervan - original ‘tin top’.
Imported from Los Angeles where it spent some of its life ferrying children to baseball games as Junior League Baseball lapel were discovered badges in the van.
Imported from sunny California it has not needed any welding so the underneath is in remarkably good, sound and original condition with a VW specialist describing it is as being in ‘good nick’.
We’ve owned it for 8 years and are only selling because it’s not being used as much as it was.
Always garaged, it spends the winter next to the central heating boiler.
Exterior
Finished in Kasan red with a Pastel white roof and windows, it has the extra 3 opening chrome quarter lights in the rear passenger compartment, very handy to keep cool when the weather’s hot.
The van is a described as a tin top as the roof is still as it left the VW factory and vans with an unmolested roof are becoming rarer.
A genuine 1970’s drive away Awning is included in the sale, which matches the van’s two tone colour scheme perfectly, so there is plenty of room for camping, it even comes complete with very 70’s curtains! (Modern replicas cost iro £400).
Interior
The back seat folds down into a full width, double rock and roll bed. We’ve used it more as a day van so comes with a built in collapsible table and chair.
It has a walk through cab so access to the rear is straightforward. The dashboard has been replaced and now incorporates a radio/ cd player (with speakers beneath the rear seat/ bed) and a power socket to charge tablets/ phones etc. It has two working interior lights.
The rear seating is covered in a gingham style material with matching curtains and complements the van’s colour scheme.
The van still has its original spare wheel cover complete with the VW logo.
All the gauges work, speedo, fuel etc and they are illuminated at night (not all other vans do that!)
Mechanically
The 2 litre engine has twin Solex carburettors which have been set up on a rolling road. The engine produces 71bhp and has recently benefited from new leads, distributor cap and spark plugs as well as having the oil changed regularly (SAE 30). The fuel tank has just been replaced with a brand new one so with the engine having to be removed, the opportunity was taken to renew all the pipes from the fuel filler to the petrol tank as well as changing all the fuel hoses so that petrol containing ethanol can be used safely. One CV joint’s boot had failed so it and the other three CV joints have been replaced a couple of weeks ago.
The mileage shows 73, 000 but I can’t confirm if that is genuine as the milometer wasn’t working when we bought it.
It is great fun to drive with a high seating position and people smile and wave as you trundle past.
Paperwork
The V5 is present and correct. There is a large folder full of receipts for parts purchased and mechanical work which has been done. Being classed as a vehicle of historical interest, road tax is free and an MOT is not required.
We’ll be sorry to see her go (think it’s a she) but she’s not being used as much as she should so it’s time for her to enjoy more adventures with someone new.
