In 1980, the first Camel Trophy known as TransAmazonica, took place in Brazil. Three teams drove Jeeps in the unforgiving conditions of the rainforest and the Camel Trophy was born. This CJ-5 is a replica of those Jeeps built for a recent Camel Trophy book launch. It is a LHD CJ-5 with a 4. 2l straight six engine and three-speed, part time 4x4, two-speed transfer box transmission. Details from 1980 event photos have been careful recreated including, the extra spare wheel, Jerrycan mounts, bull-bar and spotlights, Brazilian-spec rear wheel arches, Camel decals and the Jeep has six new 7. 00x16 bar grip tyres (as original spec) on steel 16in wheels. It has a Bestop soft-top with removable doors. It has been fitted with a brand new tailgate and a brand new windscreen frame. The Jeep currently has 12 months MoT and is registered with the DVLA and historic tax class . At the book launch the Jeep’s bonnet was signed by Andreas Bender the Camel Trophy’s event director from 1980-86. Steel CJ-5 Jeeps are rare in the UK and Camel Trophy models rarer.
