In the mid-1950s, what the "economic boom" would be like in the next decade began to take shape. It was then that Orsi sniffed the unborn luxury Granturismo market, and decided to invest resources and energy in an innovative car model, by class and engine capacity.
In 1959, disc brakes on the front and limited slip differential were added as options, accessories that became standard the following year. In the same year, the engine was redesigned to achieve 230 HP, thanks to a new cylinder head cooling system, with oversized main journals, new Weber 42 DCOE2 carburettors and Borgo pistons with a renewed design.
A couple of years after the indirect injection Lucas replaced the Weber carburettors, bringing the power to 235 hp, they also installed a new 5-speed ZF gearbox as standard.
The bodywork was "refreshed", the roofline slightly lowered and redesigned. The grille, front / rear lights and doors were redesigned. Rear disc brakes and power brakes were only introduced in 1962.
The new car belonged to a higher rank, created to combine the sportiness, typical of the Modenese brand, with the needs of luxury and comfort, allowing you to maintain high averages over long journeys on the motorway, without tiring the driver and passengers.
The cockpit was comfortable and comfortable, the road holding was safe and within reach of all types of drivers, without necessarily being experienced drivers.
The interior fittings and finishes were of high profile, in order not to disappoint the most demanding customers and the mechanics reliable and suitable for sports-type performances.
It was with these premises that the brand new 3500 GT was presented to the market, with the initials Tipo 101, the first Maserati built on a large scale.
