Description

The Maserati Sebring Series I (1962–1965) is one of the most elegant and distinctive grand tourers produced by Maserati during its artisanal phase. Derived from the Maserati 3500 GT but designed for a clientele seeking an even more exclusive luxury car, the Sebring combined performance, comfort, and advanced technical solutions for the time. The name “Sebring” was chosen in honor of Maserati's victory in the 1957 12 Hours of Sebring, underlining the brand's strong connection to motorsport.

The model was equipped with a 3, 485 cm³ inline six-cylinder engine, double overhead camshafts, and Lucas mechanical fuel injection, a very modern technology in the early 1960s, which helped it achieve around 235 hp. In some markets, it was also available with Weber carburetors. The gearbox could be manual, supplied by ZF, with the Borg-Warner automatic gearbox as an option. The top speed was around 235 km/ h, placing the Sebring among the fastest GTs of its time.

In terms of chassis and suspension, it retained Maserati's traditional configuration: tubular frame with handcrafted Vignale bodywork, independent front suspension, and rigid rear axle. Four-wheel disc brakes, still uncommon in the early 1960s, were a significant innovation and contributed to the model's technical status. Giovanni Michelotti's design featured more straight and modern lines than the 3500 GT, with double overlapping headlights and a more compact rear end, giving the Sebring an elegant look with a sporty touch.

Among other interesting facts, the model was appreciated by businessmen and well-known figures, with each unit being assembled almost individually, following the brand's tradition of craftsmanship. The interior could be highly customized, with high-quality leather upholstery, complete instrumentation, and a level of finish typical of a luxury Italian car from the 1960s.

Total production of the Series I was quite limited—around 348 units—which reinforces the model's rarity and historical value. The combination of exclusivity, technical advances, and timeless elegance make the Maserati Sebring Series I a landmark in Maserati's history and one of the most iconic Italian GTs of the 1960s.
