In 1981 the B2 MK2 Passat was born. Unlike its stable mate from Audi, the B2 80 had been born much earlier in 1978. What Volkswagen was to do was to take the style of the 80’s sporty sibling, the GT coupe and turn it into their new Passat. Somewhat cheeky it has to be said but what this meant for the Volkswagen driver was a car that looked like the Audi Quattro rally weapon with all the practicalities of a Golf. The hatchback body remained and was only available as a Volkswagen.
Fitted into this Passat is the 5 cylinder 2-litre engine. The GL5 model packed with innovative ideas made it top of the range. The 5 cylinder, fitted with fuel injection meant performance and power. It developed 115bhp at a thundering 5400rpm. Torque was a useful 164Nm at 3200rpm.
Volkswagen didn’t really shout out about their conservative Passat. This was Volkswagen’s way. And a shame because despite the lacking of glitz and glamour, the inside of the Passat GL5 is steeped in plush velour everywhere. The carpets have a quality shag about them and it feels solid. And the inside niceties don’t stop there, you have all-round electric windows, central door locking and power assisted steering.

Believed to be only five example left on UK roads, with a further eleven SORN, this really is a rare car to find, especially with such low mileage (38, 800) and in condition like this.
This Passat has evidently been looked after by its former keeper, having kept every invoice since the car was purchased in 1983, in addition to this the Passat has passed every MOT since 2005, displaying only one advisory in 2009.
The interior of the car is in superb unmarked condition (some very minor marks to the paint) the seats, headlining and dashboard are perfect.
This is certainly one you have to see in person, the photographs do not do it justice, be sure not to miss out on this incredible low mileage example, as these are becoming increasingly hard to find.
