PRINCIPLE FACTS
An exceptional SL in remarkable condition, sporting a rare colour scheme, this R107 ticks an awful lot of boxes for the shrewd collector. Coming from a long-term owner, who managed to keep the car's mileage to an absolute minimum, this SL's history is nearly as impressive as its overall condition.
It's first owner (a P. Sheehan) specified a brown soft-top to complement the choice of white paint and red leather; a near unique combination that still looks spectacular.
OVERVIEW & EQUIPMENT
Though it might not sport a huge list of options, not a lot of R107s do, there are a few crucial additions here. The factory was instructed to add rear seats, electric windows up front, heat-insulating glass and a fire extinguisher. The money that could have gone on more 'toys' appears to have been spent on the colour scheme and that leather, which are the correct choices after all.
In what's one of the only deviations from factory standard specification, a previous owner has added a more up-to-date aftermarket stereo, though this can easily be put back to a Blaupunkt unit, if the next owner prefers.
CONDITION SYNOPSIS
This SL's paintwork and general condition are hard to fault, with paint preservation from new no doubt playing a part. The hide inside looks supple and clean, allowing the next owner to be just as proud of the car with its top down. The engine bay is equally impressive, having been cleaned and detailed to our exacting standards.
Coming from a recent and extensive overhaul (see below) this SL is really in fantastic order throughout and seemingly wants for nothing.
HISTORY FILE
Ordered new from the factory, this SL was subsequently supplied to Kent Mercedes-Benz dealership Drake & Fletcher, where it was cared for up to 1999; by which time it had amassed just over 20k miles. Specialist servicing and care can be traced from 2013 to the present, with the latest care carried out by ourselves from 2021.
Aside from the detailed service and maintenance record, it's worth mentioning that the car had a change of clocks under its original factory warranty in 1990. That does mean the displayed mileage is a little low (add 12, 857 miles to it).
As mentioned, contemporary care has been carried out by us, with a large amount spent in 2021 on bringing this SL up to tip-top condition. Our work included (but wasn't limited to); fitting a new front timing seal, unblocking all chassis drain holes, a power steering system service, brake fluid change, gearbox service, new subframe bushes and engine mounts, rear brakes replaced, new Michelin tyres all round, replacement of windscreen chromework and new bonnet insulation. The total list of work carried out is far longer, too much to list here, but the final bill of £13, 374. 05 says it all...
SLSHOP SUMMARY
This striking and relatively rare Ivory R107 is a signature late model that stands head and shoulders above much of its competition. Not only is the colour scheme relatively rare and highly attractive, this SL's enviable condition, history and mileage make it one of the most desirable we've seen lately.
