Welcome to the sale of my 1991 W124 Mercedes-Benz 500E, finished in the iconic Mercedes Astral Silver Metallic, complimented perfectly by full grey/ silver leather, including the full extended wood pack, front and rear, along with perforated seats.
1991, 103, 500 Miles (167, 500KM) 2 owners, FSH, MOT’d.
Leather drivers armrest, full electric seats, heated fronts, electric windows front and rear, electric mirrors, electric drop down rear headrests, electric rear blind, cruise control, air con, heated rear windscreen and electric sunroof. All the above in fully working order.
So for the back story. This particular 500E was delivered New to the USA (third brake light suggests so) but like a lot of 500E’s, they were then shipped to foreign destinations as they were only supplied in certain countries, originally. Then In the early-mid 90s it made its way to the UAE. It’s an early gen car, making it a pre-facelift example, that in my humble opinion, is a better car in general than the facelift rebadged E500 models, overall. Includes the service booklet to back up the cars past.
In 1997, an English gent working over in the UAE purchased the car and kept it with him until 1999 when he moved back to the UK and clearly loved the car enough to bring it back with him. While it was there he had it serviced and maintained at Mercedes-Benz of Dubai with paperwork to back this up. Since living in the UK, it’s had its stamps when needed, always visiting dealers or specialists.
The Scottish Gentleman who brought the car back with him continued to put many miles on the car, sparing no expense in the process. There are stacks of invoices for the car, showing that this 500E was spent on whenever it needed it. He kept the car for a further 11 years after landing back in the UK, then selling it to a Mercedes friend and collector/ specialist, also of Maidenhead, who kept it in storage for roughly 10 years, using it very sparingly as it stood for most of the time. It still got the maintenance it needed to keep it ticking over.
I then purchased the car last year and have spent £4, 500 on recommissioning it so that it can be used on a daily basis. It now runs beautifully and is ready to be enjoyed.
Body wise, the car presents immaculately. I had the car fully resprayed including the lower skirts (finished in the correct grey) as the car had lots of stone chips, scuffs, dents on the lower trims? Flat paint from where it’d been stored etc. it was by no means bad but I’m particular about my cars so it had to be right. This came to a total of £3000.
The interior is in fantastic order, as you would expect for a relatively low mileage 500E. The build quality as I’m sure you know, is outstanding. I have also recently had a new headlining fitted. All German cars of this era seem to do this over time, where they sag and lose their shape. This was a further £400.
Now for the Positives and Negatives.
Negatives -
Air con works fine but isn’t quite cold enough so will need a regas I think
Bolster has slight wear to it but only minor for its age
Steering wheel is a touch shiny but plenty of life left in it yet
Wood shows some minor cracks in places but generally very good
Radio not working currently, but has been fine up until a few weeks ago
Interior rear view mirror is loose so doesn’t always stay in position
At 70mph it can vibrate slightly through the steering wheel (only around 70ish)
Positives -
2 owners on log book
£3500 just spent getting it recommissioned after not being used much over the last few years
immaculate inside and out (slight wearing to bolster)
Full respray costing £3000
Headlining retrimmed costing £400
Not a spot of visible rust and completely solid and dry underneath
Completely solid underneath Inc all jacking points
Everything working as it should, other than radio
Every option ticked. Highest spec possible for a 500E

1991 car. Completely period correct and standard
This is a proper example, presented in beautiful order. No dents, stone chips, scratches or flat paintwork. Really does have to be seen to be appreciated, now it’s had a full respray.
Zero knocks or rattles, gearbox pulls incredibly smoothly, as it should. Engine is effortlessly smooth as well. The 5. 0 V8 is one of the greatest engines ever made, and this example highlights that in the best possible way. Yes, it does come with the original first aid kit on the parcel shelf haha.
Stunning motorway cruiser, providing comfort and speed like very few cars of its time could, and even know. Forget what it says on paper, the performance is staggering when you consider it’s size, weight, power etc.
I’m sure i don’t need to mention the Porsche history of these cars, you wouldn’t be here if you didn’t know haha.
I wanted to keep the car for a long time but sadly things change in life so it has to go.
