1962 DKW Junior F11. 748cc 3 cylinder 2 stroke.
The time has come to reluctantly sell my DKW Junior.
If you are not familiar with the fascinating story of Auto Union/ DKW and the origin of the four rings of the Auto Union logo, please do your Google and Wikipedia research. The four rings logo appears in various places on this car, often prompting the question at car shows “is it an Audi?”..... No it isn’t.
I bought this car in 2010 from another member of the DKW owners club. I believe it was sold new from the DKW dealership in Paris in 1962. I registered it with DVLA in November 2010 so the V5 has myself as the only one UK owner. On buying the car it only required re-commissioning following long term dry storage. The re-commissioning entailed basic maintenance, servicing and safety checks, including reconditioned starter motor, new rear brake linings and cylinders, new driveshaft joints. I fitted Minilite copy alloy wheels and new tyres. I had the car re-sprayed the original colour due to faded paintwork and a few marks/ scratches. It required no rust repairs, no damage repairs and no body filler. It was a simple paint re-fresh. The bodywork was and still is in excellent condition. The chassis, floorpan and structure of the car required no welding, just simple cleaning and a light coat of waxoyle. I had it MOT tested each year until the exemption rule came in and it is of course free road tax.
In addition to the detailed description following I have available 120 photos of every area of the car. To view the photos please message me or text me with your email address and I’ll send you a link to them.
Bodywork, paintwork and cosmetics:
The bodywork is exceptional and original. No signs of damage or rust repairs. As stated I had the car re-sprayed in 2010. The paintwork remains very smart glossy and presentable. It has picked up a few marks over the years, some slight micro-blisters. I have close up photographed some minor issues.
The structure of the bodyshell and the chassis are excellent. It was waxoyled when first bought and refreshed a couple of years ago. Inner wings, under arches, boot area are clean green paint with some clear waxoyle.
The window and screen rubbers are starting to perish in places, although when we have been away overnight with the car and it has been caught in the rain none has leaked into the car. The windscreen has wiper scratches. The brightwork is presentable with some tarnishing and marks.
Mechanicals:
Just earlier this year it has had the following:
A refresh of the ignition system, new coils, plugs, HT leads, points, condensers. (The engine has a separate ignition system for each of the three cylinders). New front brake shoes and cylinders seals fitted. Rear brakes adjusted. All grease points serviced. Gearbox oil changed. Excluding the front expansion chamber I fabricated a full new exhaust system. I bought the expansion chamber from another club member, although second hand I have had an endoscope camera inside it and it is in very good condition. (If you don’t know 2 strokes, the expansion chamber is very important). I fitted a small cherry bomb rear silencer and the exhaust note is great! The car appeared to have been completely re-wired before I got it. It is still on the original 6 volt electrics, they are actually quite straightforward to convert to 12 volt but I never felt the need. Just before placing this advert I fitted a new 6 volt battery.
The wheels I fitted are 13x6 Minilite copies with new Maxis tyres and show little wear. They are fitted via professionally designed and engineered hub adaptors. They give the car a totally different look to the originals and it’s amazing how much attention this car gets at car shows. If you prefer originality I have kept the standard wheels, tyres, hub caps and bolts. The tyres are very old, but still look OK, the wheels are tidy and could easily be re-freshed, the hub caps are presentable and have the Auto Union four rings logo.
Interior:
Overall the interior is very presentable and a nice place to be. I fitted new seatbelts when I got the car. The seats are in excellent condition. Door trims and head lining are good. I made up and fitted the carpets many years ago and they are still in good condition.
The dashboard is good, all instruments/ controls working. The gaiter that should be around the column gear lever is missing and the column cover trim is cracked. Some of the interior paintwork is faded and marked.
In summary:
A very advanced car in its day, the Junior features a 3 cylinder 2 stroke engine, 4 speed column change gearbox, rack and pinion steering, double wishbone front suspension, torsion bar springs, inboard front brakes. The engine, gearbox, brakes and suspension all perform as they should but with only 748cc do not expect refinement and a dynamic driving experience but do expect a great noise, attention and fun! The DKW club is a great bunch of people and a great source for parts and information. This car is a fascinating alternative to the usual A35 and Morris Minor.
In over a decade of ownership we have used it every summer for car shows and Sunday runs plus a few long distance camping trips and it has drawn attention and curiosity wherever we have been. Carefully stored when not used, it is currently in an air chamber at my home near Durham City. Post code area DH6. I could personally deliver the car within mainland UK at reasonable cost. For a link to view the photos by all means email through here or text me with your email address, but if you have any questions or wish to view the car just phone and talk.
