2001 Mazda MX5 California Limited Edition
This is my wife's car. She has owned it for the last 19 years and is only the 2nd owner. It is her pride and joy. We got it for her to enjoy on her daily drive to and from work and that is all it did faithfully for nearly 15 years until she retired - my wife not the car! The commute was always just under 20 miles each way along fast rural A and B roads. No stop start traffic, no town driving, no pot holed country lanes. An ideal life for any car but especially for an MX5 - my wife loved driving back from work, top down, music on unwinding from the stresses of the day. Now that my wife has retired we have found we don't use the car enough - the occasional day trip out through the Kent countryside is all it has done since, apart from a couple of longer runsto Bristol and London. In our ownership (since 2003) it has always been garaged when not being used.
The car itself must be one of the best MX5's of this age you will find anywhere. We have a full service history of everything ever done to this car. The first 11 years servicing was carried out by a Mazda main dealer in Ashford - upto 77935 miles. Since then I have serviced the car on an annual basis following the Mazda service schedule. The service details with mileages are listed below and include regular cambelt, water pump and anti freeze changes.
The car is rust free, the common rust area at the rear of the sills was properly sorted by careful replacement of the rear wings and all the inner layers were cleaned and rust proofed before refiting new wings . The car has had rust protection applied to the underside and on the inside of all cavities on a periodic basis. The car is totally unmodified apart from an electric aerial and the Radio/ CD player which was replaced when the original failed. It has been utterly reliable, the only failure being a camshaft sensor which caused poor starting when hot so was changed. The original battery finally expired in 2019 and was replaced with a genuine OEM Panasonic "GEL" battery - the specific type required for MX5's (note it is not a cheap aftermarket replacement). This is the first replacement as the original battery lasted 18 years! It has four good tyres, all identical - we always replace the tyres as a complete set of four (tyre wear has always been very even and the tyres last around 35, 000 miles per set - this being the fourth set on the car). The hood was replaced in 2018 with one made by Prestige Hoods - one of the best quality hoods you can get - it is identical to the original and operates perfectly with no leaks. So easy to drop down in just a few seconds, and only a fraction longer to put up - a trademark of the MX5. The catches work as they should and do not "slip" open as some do when they get worn. It still has the original limited edition "California" badges on the front wings and also the special floor mats - these were taken out of the car when we got it to preserve them! The alloy wheels are the originals and were refurbished in 2017. Mechanically everything works as it always has, never fails to start first time, no rattles or clonks, drives like it did when we first bought it in 2003.
Check the MoT history - it has only failed 1 MoT in its life and that was this year - the rear calipers were replaced and new slider pins fitted to the front calipers to clear the faults.
If you want a MX5 Mk2 then this is the car for you, you will not find a better one.
