It is called Mercedes-Benz C 36 AMG and is a version of the C-Class W202 series.
The 3. 2-liter in-line 6-cylinder of the E 320 has been transplanted to this model, so the displacement has increased to 3, 606 cc thanks to the increased bore and stroke.
It is a high-performance version with the aim of establishing itself in the market on the basis of the fame of the previous 190 Evo II, which however was produced in only 502 units.
The crankshaft derives from the 3. 5-liter diesel engine, while the front and rear axle brakes derive from the contemporary SL 600 and E 420 respectively.
In addition to new components, Mercedes develops special pistons: the lubrication system is revised, the exhaust and intake ducts and the timing of the distribution are modified.
The C-Class, thus prepared, reaches the remarkable power of 280 HP and a torque of 385 Nm.
The C36 AMG achieves some commercial success: from 1993 to 1997, it sold 5, 221 units, ten times the previous 190 Evolution II.
In 1996 it was used as the first AMG Safety Car in Formula 1, a tradition still in vogue today on circuits all over the world.
