Description
Very early 2000 Boxster S begrudgingly for sale.
I bought this from the previous owner of 22 years and immediately took it on a 1000-mile roadtrip to Germany, where it performed faultlessly. It has been used regularly since, with the intention that my wife would use it as her fine weather commuter. However, it’s apparently too smart for parking at work (despite being worth less than her previous SLK)…
I have priced this to be the cheapest manual 3. 2 on here, but I am fairly certain that it won’t be the worst. It has been well used, but also incredibly well loved since new. It was used as a daily driver for 22 years, and as such has covered a little over 176k miles. However, it had an engine rebuild circa 30k miles ago in 2018, and a new clutch assembly was fitted while the engine was out. These works came to nearly £6k alone (with paperwork). IMS and RMS also done at the same time.
It has a huge history file, which is extensive if not exhaustive. In its earlier years it was covered by a Hartech Lifetime Maintenance plan with plenty of paperwork. The benefit of buying with higher mileage and a fresh engine is that, as the previous owner told me, “All the usual Boxster bits have been replaced two or three times!”
It had a new double-skinned roof last year with upgraded glass rear window, complete with heating elements. It all works faultless and feels very nice and snug.
Four new tyres were also fitted this year.
It has H&R coilovers and uprated H&R anti-roll bars fitted, which provide a compliant ride while enhancing the already sharp handling. It also has a complete EuroCupGT exhaust and manifolds, which sounds utterly fantastic. If I call it a mini 911 then I will upset a lot of people, so I won’t do that.
Inside, the interior has withstood the test of time extremely well. Carpets are nice, seats are superbly comfortable and the leather is still supple and not extensively worn. There’s a fantastic Pioneer headunit fitted with DAB, sat nav (including European maps, as I discovered), Apple CarPlay etc.
MoT’d until March and with a good history.
As you’d expect given the age (it was one of the first Ss in the UK) and mileage, it’s not perfect, but then it is cheap. It has some gravel rash and light bubbling due to being used all year round, but nothing too unsightly or worrying. The general condition of the paintwork is certainly very nice and it still attracts a number of positive reactions when out and about.
The central locking only works from the key, and not remotely. This is apparently a common issue caused by a worn ignition barrel. A new barrel is supplied, but I haven’t seen the value in having it fitted.
Finally, it has the common Boxster crunch into 2nd from cold. It is fine when warmed through, with no in-gear noise. Double-clutch the first couple of changes in the morning and it’s fine from then on.
All in all then, an early, well-used and extremely well loved Boxster S with a few choice enhancements, which is crying out to be driven and used regularly.
Unfortunately, my multicar policy is no longer viable so we need to get down from 10 cars. With two children, the Boxster sadly isn’t the most practical to keep, and I am too sentimentally attached (and financially deep!) into my other, older Porsche to consider selling that. Plus it has 4 (kind of) seats, which makes it a more sensible proposition.
