Footnotes
One of the most gifted automotive engineers of all time, Gian Paolo Dallara graduated from Milan Polytechnic in 1959 with a degree in aeronautical engineering. The newly qualified Dallara went to work for Ferrari, followed by Maserati and Lamborghini, and while employed a Sant'Agata was part of the team responsible for developing the legendary Miura. He went on to work on Formula 1 projects with De Tomaso and Frank Williams before setting up his own company in his hometown of Varano de Melegari in January 1972. Today, 50 years later, Dallara is one of the world's most important companies specialising in the design, development and production of racing and high-performance cars.
Offered here is one of Dallara's early Formula 3 designs: the F391. The first Dallara F3 car had been built in 1978 for Walter Wolf Racing; renamed 'Emiliani' it went on to win the Italian F3 Championship in 1980. The first Dallara-badged F3 car - the F381 - appeared in 1981 and the company would go on to become dominant in the category, manufacturing the overwhelming majority of F3 cars today.
Dallara's F3 car evolved gradually over the next few years, and by 1991, when the car offered here was made, featured a carbon-fibre body tub and wishbone-type suspension: by push-rods at the front and pull-rods at the rear. Driving this car in the Italian Championship, Giambattista Busi won two races and finished 3rd five times to take the title in a season dominated by the F391, which won 10 out of the 12 races.
Now extensively restored, although not in its 1991 livery, this car is offered with an FIA Technical Passport.
Please note that this vehicle will be subject to VAT on the Hammer Price.
