Description
This single cylinder pre-war Royal Enfield Model J was the subject of a recent full restoration. The RE has matching numbers for frame and engine as confirmed by the RE Owner’s club.
Nice looking and very presentable Royal Enfield. Some non-original parts fitted such as levers, silencer and rear light but it would be very easy to make factory correct again, as these parts are readily available to buy.
The paint on the petrol tank and throughout is nice. The paint on the cylinder is not to the same high standard, with some smaller areas of paint coming off in places.
Mechanically, the Model J has been rebuild. The cylinder was honed and a new piston fitted. There is very good compression and it starts, idles and runs nicely.
The clutch feels very good and surprisingly light. There is no valve lifter fitted, so starting takes a good kick to manage. The brakes are ok (for 1937). The Enfield rear brake works better than the front brake.
