La BMW Isetta est aujourd'hui une voiture de collection très recherchée. La microvoiture munichoise avait combiné un concept intelligent avec l'élégance de la simplicité, représentant une véritable voiture futuriste pour l'époque.
Isetta est un diminutif italien qui vient d'Iso. Dans le nombre de roues, BMW a décidé de s'écarter de l'ancêtre italien : l'original n'en avait que trois, tandis que la version allemande sortait de l'usine avec quatre roues. Avec 10 000 unités vendues la première année seulement, Isetta a d'abord conquis le cœur des Allemands, puis s'est propagée comme une traînée de poudre dans d'autres pays et en huit ans, un total de 161 728 unités ont été vendues. À ce jour, c'est l'une des monocylindres les plus vendues au monde.
En 1962, avec l'interruption de la production, l'ère des petites voitures à bulles prend fin. La prospérité généralisée augmentait et le marché avait commencé à exiger des voitures plus précieuses.
