The P6 was launched in 1963 and promptly won car of the year. It was an advanced design with panels that bolted onto a base unit, disc brakes on all four wheels and de-dion tube rear suspension. The single carburettor version was joined by the TC in 1966 and then in 1968 Rover installed a modified version of the lightweight “Buick” 3500 V8. The manual “S” version had a top speed of over 120mph, a 0-60 time of 10 seconds and 24mpg economy.
This car is a 1972 Rover P6 3500S in its original colour of Davos White. It was supplied new by Mann Egerton of Kings Lynn to the “Dowager Marchiness of Cholmonley of Houghton” who kept it for 14 years before selling it back to them. It is still fitted with their original number plates. The second owner, also in Kings Lynn was a public-school headmaster and then it was in the same family for 20 years before we sold it to its last owner in 2018.
It is fitted with front head rests, power steering and black “flat pleat” leather which may have been a special order as box-pleat leather was fitted to most cars from 1971. As you can see from the photos, it is in outstanding condition. The mileage is 78, 000 as it was little used and dry stored for a long period. Before we sold it in 2018 we carried out a comprehensive re-commissioning and fitted it with a new brake servo, clutch slave cylinder, battery and electric fuel pump (Huco) and alternator and it’s just had another round of spending with various new parts fitted and an oil and filter change.
The upper body and paint finish and panel fit are very good and the underside is excellent. Many years ago it had two tiny repairs by the rear jacking points but other than that the underside is completely original. The interior is also in remarkable, original condition and the vinyl roof covering is in perfect condition. The engine is smooth and sweet with strong oil pressure and the 4 speed manual gearbox is precise and free from noises.
