The BMW Z1 is something different. Those doors that slide down, that shape, that design – the whole driving experience – there’s nothing quite like it. All built in LHD and powered by the superb M20 2. 5 litre straight six, most famously from the classic E30 325i – but also in many other BMWs of the era – and made from plastic rather than metal, the first BMW Z car is not just a remarkable design, but a superbly easy classic car to own – it doesn’t rust, and the engines don’t break. And if its admiring looks and plenty of interest you’re after, the Z1 certainly fits the bill. Z stands for zukunft in German, meaning future, and its fair to say that the Z1s avant-guard styling and futuristic looks resemble more a prototype than a production car. But nearly 30 years after it became BMW’s signpost for the future, the Z1 looks as classic and exceptional as it always did.
This particular Z1 has been known to us for some time, having been a local car, and was subject to a considerable refresh in 2019/ 2020. We’ve seen many Z1s, not all of which have aged well, and with this particular car we have been impressed by the overall condition and are confident that the new owner will be able to enjoy his or her Z1 with confidence. In gleaming Top Red (quirky paint names matching the eccentric styling) with camo interior, this is perhaps the most iconic and popular combo for this fabulous little machine. The paintwork is very good, all the body panels (a weakness on Z1s) are in super condition with no visible fissures around the fixing points, and the camo interior is in well above average condition with no staining and almost no fade (again, a common affliction). The roof is in good order and the all-round mechanical condition is exactly what you’d expect from a low mileage example. As more and more Z1s leave the country, finding a good quality, unmolested example is becoming harder and harder. This is an example we would not hesitate to recommend.
As mentioned above, our technical team have carried out a thorough inspection of the Z1 and are very happy with the results – only a handful of minor issues have been reported for rectification prior to the new owner taking delivery.
