Description
A true BMW unicorn. Experimental, beautifully engineered and increasingly collectable. The Z1 is not just rare, it is historically important.
BMW Z1
1991/ H | 22, 287 miles
Finished in Top Red with dark grey nubuck and camouflage leather interior
There are cars that are admired, and then there are cars that are remembered. The BMW Z1 belongs firmly to the latter. Conceived by BMW’s experimental Technik division in the late 1980s, the Z1 was never meant to follow convention. It was a rolling research project, a showcase of ideas that would later influence the wider BMW range, wrapped in a body so distinctive it still feels futuristic more than three decades on.
This 1991 example is finished in the iconic Top Red, paired with its original dark grey nubuck and camouflage-patterned leather interior. With just 22, 287 miles recorded, its preservation is exceptional. Of the approximately 75 cars supplied new to the UK, very few survive in this condition, with this level of originality, documentation and careful custodianship. It is believed that only a small handful remain registered for the road today.
The Z1’s engineering is as fascinating as its design. Its innovative thermoplastic body panels were intended to be removable and replaceable, while the chassis was galvanised from the outset. Most famously, the vertically retracting doors remain one of the boldest production-car design features ever approved by a major manufacturer, transforming the driving experience and guaranteeing attention wherever the car goes.
Power comes from BMW’s silky straight-six, paired with a five-speed manual gearbox and rear-wheel drive. It is a car that blends balance, lightness and mechanical feel with genuine usability, delivering an experience that is engaging rather than intimidating. Roof off, doors lowered, engine singing, the Z1 offers a sense of occasion that few modern cars can replicate.
What truly elevates this example is its provenance. Supplied new through Rydale BMW, the car’s early life was spent in the care of BMW main dealers including Coombs of Guildford and Vines. In later years it passed through respected specialists, including Munich Legends, before being placed into careful long-term storage. From 2011 to 2022 the car was kept under SORN, preserving its originality, before undergoing a comprehensive recommissioning by Classic Heroes. This extensive programme addressed mechanical, braking, cooling and service items throughout, ensuring the car returned to the road exactly as it should. More recently, in 2024, Heritage AutoWerks carried out further servicing and detail work, leaving the car fully sorted and ready to enjoy.
The history file is outstanding. It includes the original stamped service book, owner’s manuals, BMW service card, build sheet, BMW Certificate of Authenticity, previous sales invoices dating back to 1993, a large collection of service and repair invoices, a run of previous V5 documents, twenty-one MOT certificates and even a selection of original tax discs. It is the kind of archive rarely seen and seldom repeated.
Condition reflects the care shown throughout its life. The Top Red paint retains excellent depth and clarity, presenting beautifully with only very light evidence of careful use. The interior, often the weakest point of Z1s, is particularly impressive. The nubuck remains fresh, the camouflage seat centres show only minor age-related stretching, and the overall cabin atmosphere is one of originality rather than restoration. The most recent MOT, carried out in August 2025, resulted in a clean first-time pass with no advisories, underlining the health of the car today.
This Z1 occupies a rare middle ground. It is not an over-restored showpiece, nor is it a tired survivor. It is an authentically preserved, low-mileage example, sympathetically maintained, properly recommissioned and fully usable. Exactly what informed collectors look for.
For the enthusiast or collector, the BMW Z1 offers something genuinely different. It represents a moment when BMW allowed imagination to lead engineering, producing a car that was never intended to make commercial sense, only technical and emotional sense. Few cars of the era carry such charisma. Fewer still are found in this condition.
This is not simply a rare Z1.
It is one of the very best.
