Airstream is an American brand of caravans which are easily recognised by the distinctive shape of their rounded and polished aluminium coachwork. This body shape dates back to the 1930s and is based on designs created by Hawley Bowlus. Airstream trailers and recreational vehicles are manufactured in Jackson Center, Ohio. The company, now a division of Thor Industries, employs more than 800 people, and is the oldest in the industry.
Airstreamers are a group who share a community spirit because of their common love of the trailers. In the early 1950s, Airstream company founder Wally Byam began leading groups of owners on travels to many parts of the world, where the towed trailers were quite a remarkable sight. Photos taken of the trailers in front of many famous tourist sites were common. This promoted a mystique which surrounded Airstreams and persists to this day.
The five-berth Airstream International 685 is a great, retro caravan ideal for families travelling. This quirky model contains three bunk beds at the rear of the model which is good for people on holiday with young children. Parents can get their head down on the fold-out double bed which takes the place of the front seating area.
During the day this area can be used to relax, eat meals, play board games or watch television from the numerous power points available. The bathroom comes complete with shower cubicle, toilet and washbasin and sits adjacent to the sleeping areas. Families will be able to cook up a storm in the kitchen with everything that a holidaymaker could ask for.
The unit features a coverable sink and draining board which can be used as preparation space. There is also a two-shelf oven with a four-burner hob on the top along with a fridge and microwave, meaning that making any meal is a breeze.
