Description
This is without the doubt the most exceptional and most original R107 series Mercedes Benz we have seen. There are so many unique selling points to this car which contribute to it being a true collector’s piece. This Mercedes Benz 300SL is completely original, has covered just 30, 500 miles from new and has had three owners from new, two of them local from 1986 to 2021. D100 JWW was owned by one of our long standing, regular customers for 31 years and in 2021 the difficult decision was made to begin selling off his impressive collection of cars and memorabilia. The car has been known to us since the 1990’s, and is an exceptional, top class car that will prove somewhat unrepeatable.
Before detailing the cars history, we start with confirming the Mercedes Benz still wears its original supplying dealership number plates from Westway Garage, York. The SL comes with its original service book, manuals, wallet, factory data card, spare keys and both hard and soft top removal tools. Adding to this we can confirm the bodywork is completely original, has hardly seen wet weather in over 30 years and is completely factory correct. The car has not even had a car park dent in its life, never suffered from corrosion and has been meticulously maintained, serviced and waxoyled its entire life. Only the most the smallest of stone chips can be seen on the car, the only real signs that the car has seen the road.
D100 JWW was supplied new by Westway Garage on the 19th September 1986 to a York City Centre Estate Agents Stansfield Commercial, YO1. The supplying dealership looked after the car for its first owner and the service book has been stamped at 1208 miles in 1986, 5809 and 12046 miles in 1987, 19034 miles in 1988 and 21763 miles in 1989. In 1990 at four years old the 300SL sold to the second owner, a retired civil engineer living between York and Malton; a car fanatic with a life of motor racing, classic cars and many years in business. Since buying the car in 1990 the SL has covered less than 8, 000 miles with summer use only, and the occasional trip to Le Mans in the early 2000's. He parted with the car in 2021, and has since been with a collector in dry storage.
With the cars owner of over 30 years, MOT certificates have been kept with the history with mileages recorded at 23510, 24376, 24758, 24973, 25474, 25803, 25818, 26199, 26443, 26696, 27762, 28732, 28791, 28792 (the owners' Malton based garages and business premises were next door to the MOT station!), 28992, 29149, 29403, 29531, 29590, 29728, 29780, 30197, 30341 and 30402 miles. 18 old tax discs have even been kept with the car, along with a ferry ticket and 2001 Le Mans ticket. Throughout ownership, the engineer and highly skilled and accomplished owner had enjoyed carrying out minor servicing annually, changing the oil and attending to general basic service items. Further to this, in 1993 the supplying York dealership carried out an interim service at 24721 miles and more major services were carried out by Mercedes Benz specialists SM Autocare in Pickering. Invoices are on file for servicing at 27787 and 29577 miles. Throughout the cars life it has been over serviced having covered just low annual mileage.
Cars like this are so hard to find. This is a true time warp, it has been spent the majority of its life under a cover, garaged and therefore kept immaculate. The bodywork as mentioned is pristine, the paint finish and chrome first class, the hard top and soft top exceptional, original alloy wheels unscuffed and the under bonnet area and boot compartment are exceptional. The interior looks almost new, the stunning original seats look new with no sagging, carpets have no wear, the dashboard, woodwork, dials and door panels are immaculate, as are door shuts sill trims. The underside is outstanding and totally original of course - the thin layer of waxoyl ensuring the car has never had opportunity to suffer. Although the car has hardly seen the road this past couple of years, it drives like a new SL. The engine and transmission perfect, general handling of Mercedes Benz top quality. This is the best of the best, it is an unrepeatable opportunity to buy one of the most desirable later model SL's with ultra-low mileage, low ownership, exceptional maintenance and so importantly and rare, such a high level of originality - it's hard to believe a 37 year old can still look this good and be original. With restored show standard examples on the market at this price level and often more, the discerning collector will no doubt realise this is very much unrepeatable, and has all the benefits of being an example that has never required dismantling, but remains in showroom condition 37 years on from leaving the York Mercedes Benz dealership showroom.
