The nineties were a very interesting time for BMW, growing out of the huge success of the iconic 80’s Legends, such as the E28 M5, M635csi and of course the ubiquitous E30 M3. The early E36 M3 3. 0 made a significant leap forward, but left some customers underwhelmed, with some stiff competition keeping BMW on their toes. Enter the M3 3. 2 litre ‘Evo’.
The E36 M3 3. 2 was given the title ‘Evo’ primarily for the UK market, to distinguish it from the 3. 0 litre version. BMW wanted to make the point that the 3. 2 was going to be an important car, answering those critics and putting the company right back at the top. They did a pretty good job, too. Official rumour has it that BMW approached the new engine heavily inspired by their recent, highly successful development of the engine for the Maclaren F1, and included the introduction of a large number of engine modifications and tech developments such as increased compression ratios, lightweight pistons, a dual pick up oil pump and double VANOS. For the first time this pushed BMW M over the magic number of 100hp per litre – a production car record.
Pushing out an impressive 321bhp – a massive hike up from its predecessor, the Evo also benefitted from revised suspension and a quicker rack, as well as numerous cosmetic modifications (which includes those iconic Vader two-piece seats). These changes make many people look upon the Evo as an entirely different car from the 3. 0 M3, despite sharing the same shape and E designation.
This particular Evo is an absolute gem. Having spent much of its life in storage, the mileage is incredibly low. With a total of only five keepers spanning over 25 years (and an average of under 3000 miles per year), this car seems to have escaped the dark period for the E36 M3, where rock bottom values saw the majority modified beyond rescue or neglected into disrepair. Frozen in time, this lovely machine has emerged from its slumber and been presented to our technical team, who pronounce it to be one of the best Evos we’ve seen in a decade. With a program of work to recommission the car (obvious mechanical/ perishable items – the car is physically excellent), we are delighted to start to find a new home for this – now very rare – fabulous example of one of the most iconic cars in the history of BMW M.
