Description
One of only 37 examples built to the LHD specification - Beautiful coachwork in Garnet green - Interior trimmed in parchment-coloured Connolly hide - Recently carried-out extensive overhaul service - Documented by copies of the factory records The 1962-introduced Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III and its Bentley S3 counterpart were powered by the 6. 2-litre V8 engine that had been introduced in the Cloud II/ S2 — albeit with larger carburettors, a new distributor and an increased compression ratio — and were factory-equipped with a GM four-speed automatic transmission. The most noticeable changes compared with the previous models were the introduction of four headlights, the absence of side lamps on the wings, and a slightly lower radiator grille. Inside, space was improved with separate front seats and more room for rear passengers. As the last Rolls-Royce with a separate chassis, the Silver Cloud III proved highly successful both at home and abroad and was produced until autumn 1965. This Garnet-coloured example with beige leather interior, previously restored ‘Chinese Eye’ Silver Cloud III, was newly built for the American market and equipped with the following specifications: Radio - Electric aerial - Simple Sundyn glass all around - Electric windows in both doors - Whitewall Firestone tyres. According to copies of the factory records, LSFU123 was delivered to Mulliner Park Ward on 9 December 1963, completed on 12 March 1964 and the next day loaded in Liverpool aboard the vessel “Media” to New York City. The original owner was Fred W. Graupner from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, who acquired the car on 11 July 1964 through J. S. Inskip. Graupner kept his Rolls for only two months and traded it in on 24 September 1964. The car appears shortly afterwards to have entered the collection of Robert Frank of Delray Beach, Florida. Frank kept the car for decades and offered it for sale in Summer 2002 in The Flying Lady. The advertisement described the car as a machine and stated that the Rolls was equipped with a new air conditioning system, new leather, wood, carpets, headlining and tyres and was in excellent condition. The Rolls was purchased by the current owner just under a decade ago and has been on static display ever since. This rare and stylish vehicle will undoubtedly give its next lucky owner plenty of pleasure. It is now available for viewing at DD Classics in London; please call to arrange an appointment.
