Three years ago, though, the Roadster was joined by the more sophisticated and powerful V8-engined, coupe-bodied GT, itself the result of a five-year development. With its Elise-style epoxy-bonded aluminium tub, glassfibre reinforced composite bodywork and 4. 8-litre BMW V8, the GT is an altogether more potent proposition that requires its 362bhp to propel just 1240kg. The upshot is a supercar-nudging power-to-weight ratio of 297bhp/ ton... - Evo magazine

Founded by brothers Martin and Friedhelm Wiesmann in Dlmen, Germany in 1988, Wiesmann GmbH specialised in the production of hand-built, custom-made, high-performance coups and convertibles. Production commenced in 1993 with the MF30, and throughout its life Wiesmann relied exclusively on BMW power plants, at its peak producing around 180 cars per year. The company adopted a gecko logo because, or so they claimed, its cars 'stick like geckos to a wall'. Distinctly retro (note the 'C-Type Jaguar' radiator grille) and somewhat reminiscent of some Zagato designs from the 1950s and 1960s, Wiesmann's cars kept basically the same body style throughout production.

Wiesmann's first model was the MF30 coup and convertible, which was powered by a BMW 3. 0-litre inline six. It was superseded by the MF3, similarly BMW-powered but using the more powerful S54 3. 2-litre six from the E45 M3 sports saloon.

In 2003 Wiesmann introduced the GT MF4, a closed coup intended for long-distance touring, which was followed in 2009 by a roadster version. The MF4 chassis was aluminium and the bodywork glassfibre composite, while suspension was independent all round by means of double transverse links. Power came from BMW's 4. 8-litre normally aspirated N62 V8 producing 367bhp, or the smaller (4. 0-litre) but more powerful (420bhp) S65B40 unit in the MF4-S roadster. The standard transmission was the six-speed sports automatic. Wiesmann claimed performance figures of 0-100kmh (62mph) of 4. 6 seconds and a top speed of 291km/ h (181mph). Evo reckoned the Wiesmann GT MF4 a starkly original take on big-cube performance thuggery. It should be intimidating but it's actually fabulously accessible.

Being essentially a low-volume hand-crafted operation, Wiesmann was able to offer its customers bespoke specifications and guaranteed exclusivity. This service applied particularly to the interior, where a range of handmade leather designs was on offer, catering for all possible tastes. Unusually, the GT MF4's stacked array of instruments was grouped in the middle of the dashboard rather than behind the steering wheel, while knobs, switches and instrument bezels were all chromed, reinforcing the retro look.

Sadly, and like so many independent sports car constructors down the years, Wiesmann eventually succumbed to adverse economic factors beyond its control and filed for bankruptcy in 2013.

Sold new on 23rd November 2006, the example we offer has the normally aspirated 4. 8-litre BMW V8 producing 367bhp, and the rare manual transmission. According to Wiesmann, only 118 cars with this engine and manual transmission were delivered in three years. Our car has covered only 26, 550 km and is said to be in excellent condition and accident-free.

This car features the rare, if not unique, colour scheme of Aston Martin Green, in two-layer metallic paint, with brown leather and Alcantara interior and contrasting stitching. It also has two protective strips in stainless steel on each side to protect the leather when getting in and out (custom-made for this car).
