In 1958, the Volvo PV544 was presented, as the successor to the PV444. Actually, the already available Amazon is the successor, but for many people that completely new model is still a bit pricey. As a kind of interim solution, Volvo has introduced the PV544, an upgraded variant of the PV444 that has been in production for 14 years.
The PV544 Sport B16 that you see here is one from 1958 to be precise. A car that was previously restored in 2011 and is actually in very neat condition. This is partly due to the quality and the fact that it was only driven during the summer months. The bodywork, as is usually the case with Volvo, feels extremely solid. Doors fit nicely into the catches and the sheet metal has neat fits everywhere. The beige paintwork is also very neat, some minimal damage must be carefully looked for. Chrome, aluminium parts and rubbers are also in a healthy condition.
The interior has a lot of charm. The blue partly skai, partly fabric upholstery is very neat and has of course been renewed in the past. The new light grey carpet with blue seat upholstery and many parts in paint colour gives the car a very nice, warm appearance. The meters all function properly and buttons and levers also do what is asked of them. This cat-back also received beautiful accessories from that period, such as a red sunscreen above the windshield and a roof rack on which the skis were already mounted. The PV544 has a particularly spacious interior that makes it easy to travel with your whole family.
Even fully loaded with passengers and luggage, you will simply arrive at your final destination because the PV544 has plenty of torque and the power does not disappoint. Don?t expect sports car performance, of course, but the PV544 with B16B engine is an exceptionally comfortable travel companion. This PV544 is also equipped with a four-speed manual gearbox and is fully synchronized, which makes driving long distances more comfortable.
While driving the PV544, it is striking how well such a Swedish hatchback, also known as Kattegen, actually drives. Nice steering characteristics and an 86 hp engine that provides excellent acceleration and has enough power to keep up with today?s traffic. Very enjoyable.
The underbody of the car is also excellent, and that also applies to sills and screen edges. All in all, the Volvo ?Kattegen? is a car that is ideal for frequent use and that is also practical and reliable.
