Well known to the owners club, 401 BPK is surely one of the most original examples left and this is due to the very careful ownership of the car.

The Sportsman spent much of its early life at the House of Commons, having being sold new to an M. P. Whilst the Sportsman model tended to be only seen in two tone paint, this vehicle was ordered in single colour as the first owner considered a bright two tone colour combination may be perceived to be a little too ostentatious.
In 1985 the rare and rather special Sportsman was displayed in Gaydon Motor Museum where it remained until 2006. Since 2006, the car has been displayed on the Club stand and has had light use.
The car is a delight to drive and has the desirable overdrive gearbox. The car presents very well with a good standard of paintwork and original interior.
A sensation when launched in 1947, the Vanguard was powered by an all-new overhead-valve ‘four’ of 2, 088cc that would later be employed to good effect in Triumph's TR sports cars.
The engine's excellent flexibility was claimed to make a four-speed gearbox unnecessary, an all-synchromesh column change three-speeder remaining the norm for many years. This engine/ transmission package was carried over to the unitary-construction Vanguard III introduced in 1955, the Sportsman version of which came with a 90bhp, twin-carburettor engine; overdrive as standard; front anti-roll bar; bigger brakes; two-tone paintwork; and an MG-style radiator grille.
901 examples were completed before production ceased in 1957.
This Sportsman was acquired from a Mr S Banks in 1985, the mileage total at that time being recorded as 63, 235.
