The limited edition Boxster S 550 Spyder was introduced in late 2003 to celebrate 50 years since the production of the legendary Porsche 550 Spyder. Production was limited to 1, 953 units worldwide, each of which carried a numbered plaque. UK RHD production was c. 150 units, so this remains a very rare limited edition model.
All 550 Spyders were produced in exclusive GT Silver metallic paint (the same colour used for the Carrera GT), not available on any other 986 Boxster model. The interiors were finished in extended Cocoa Brown leather with a matching brown hood as standard, with Grey/ black hood as a no cost option. The car was available with either a 6-speed manual or 5-speed auto Tiptronic transmission.
Mechanical changes made for the 550 Spyder included a new air filter and intake system (from the soon to be launched 987) which increased power output to 266bhp, M030 sports suspension with a 10mm lower ride height, 5mm wheel spacers and a short shift gear lever for snappier gear changes. The 18” 5-spoke 996. 2 Carrera wheels were finished in Seal Grey with silver rims, with matching coloured Porsche crest wheel caps. Other cosmetic changes to the exterior include alloy finish brake calipers, a chrome Boxster S bootlid badge, and a “stacked” stainless steel exhaust tailpipe flanked with silver mesh grilles to the lower rear bumper vents.
The standard specification also included Litronic xenon headlights with washer system and PSM Porsche Stability Management.
The interiors of the 550 Spyders were very special indeed. They featured extended leather to the dashboard and door cards, sports seats in perforated Cocoa Brown leather, with GT Silver painted seat backs, GT Silver trim to the dash console, instrument surround and centre console, additional perforated leather to the steering wheel, door handles and gear lever gaiter, and a carpeted centre console “delete option” with the numbered plaque.
Interior options include automatic air conditioning, Becker Porsche CDR-23 CD radio with 6 disc CD changer, BOSE sound system, and heated seats.
WH04VPM is number 1702/ 1953, and was purchased new by a lady from Jersey in the Channel Islands. She collected the car from the factory in Stuttgart on 22. 6. 04. It was ordered in (…we think) the “correct” specification – Cocoa Brown interior and the manual gearbox!
The following quote is by the original owner’s son, from a Pistonheads forum post in May 2021, who takes up her ownership story…
“My mother bought a Boxster 550 new in 2004 and collected it from the factory. She had it for about 5 years and over a boozy lunch said, your Vanquish looks so nice, do they do a girly version of that? So, a Sage Green DB9 Volante with a tan interior arrived and boy did it look nice. My mother didn’t like it to drive at all, however. So a couple of years later, I was driving about and saw outside a car dealer my mother’s old Boxster 550 for sale. It turned out to have only about another 3, 000 miles and so it came back to the family. She still has it to this day and I’m not sure it’s covered more than 20, 000 miles in total.”
After owning her 550 Spyder for the majority of its life, she eventually decided to sell the car in late 2023, at which point it was purchased by us, imported from Jersey and UK registered as WH04VPM. By this stage the mileage had increased to just over 25, 000 miles.
Despite its low annual mileage, the car was serviced regularly on Jersey, either at the OPC Jacksons, or one of the few Porsche specialists on the island, as follows:

We have completed a comprehensive schedule of works since acquiring the car, to prepare it thoroughly for sale, as follows:
Major service, spark plugs, coil packs, auxiliary drive belt, AOS air oil separator, brake fluid change, front brake discs and pads, rear brake discs and pads, front bump stops, AC condensers, exhaust manifold flange bolts and gaskets.
In addition, we felt that the clutch pedal weight was too heavy (probably the result of lots of stop-start driving on Jersey), so have replaced the clutch, and the exhaust system clamps and sleeves.
The car now looks and drives like a 2-3 year old example, with a tightness to the chassis and major controls that you only get from low mileage examples. The paintwork remains in excellent original order (the car was garaged for its whole life), and the interior shows virtually no signs of wear, aside from a few creases in the leather of the drivers seat bolsters.
A fantastic example of the limited edition 550 Spyder “Anniversary” Boxster S, for us this represents the peak of the 986 model. A surefire future classic with just 25, 035 miles and 2 owners from new.
