Production of the S2000 began in 1999 and spanned 10 years. Created to celebrate Honda's 50th Anniversary. Based upon Honda's 'X-bone' frame, lighter and stronger than its contemporaries allowing the engine to be situated in behind the front axle hence the 50:50 weight distribution. The engine is the undisputed heart and soul of the S2000. The F20C power unit is a masterpiece - aluminium block and head, dual overhead cams, forged pistons, fibre reinforced cylinder liners, forged crankshafts and a VTEC system for both intake and exhaust camshaft. The result - a famously reliable 2. 0 litre that loves to be revved all the way to the screaming 8300 rpm redline, unleashing the full 240 PS (which incidentally lent this power unit the title of 'Worlds most powerful naturally aspirated engine bhp / litre'.) A single plate clutch, close ratio six speed box and Torsen torque-sensing limited-slip-diff help deliver the power to the wheels. Early S2000's were renowned for slightly unpredictable and sudden oversteer. Honda were constantly carrying out tweaks and improvements behind the scenes but the first significant 'Official' face-lift arrived in 2004. Chassis was strengthened and stiffened. Geometry was reconfigured and new spring and damper rates adopted. ABS now came with YAW control and brake pads were upgraded. Steering ratios were fettled to reduce high speed 'nervousness' of earlier cars. Gearbox synchronisers were uprated to carbon fibre, clutch and flywheel beefed up. Externally front and rear bumpers were recontoured to improve aero and larger oval rear pipes added. These additions alone resulted in 5% less drag. Triple beam headlights and LED rear lights became standard fitment. Inside the cabin saw various revisions including to the centre console, audio system, AC and more.
For the 2008 MY we saw the introduction of new 17" 5 Spoke wheels (as fitted here) and further revisions to the suspension (firmer springs, dampers and anti-roll bar along with some minor interior updates.
