1959 was a pivotal year for Buick, whose range, which had not been redesigned since 1936, was recomposed. It was now based around three models that were given new names. The LeSabre, Invicta and Electra replaced the Special, Century, Super and Roadmaster of the 1950s - the Limited only lasting until 1958. The LeSabre corresponds to the Special and the Invicta to the Century, while at the top of the range, the Electra replaces both the Super and the Roadmaster. However, the Electra is offered in two body lengths, the standard model (5. 60 metres) and the Electra 225 (for 225 inches, or 5. 72 metres), the brand's must-have. Built on the same 126. 3-inch wheelbase (3. 21 metres), Electras were available as saloons, hardtop coupes (without pillars), convertibles and estate cars. In 1962, the standard version was abandoned and all the cars were 225's. Under the Electra engine roared the Wildcat 445 V8 (referring to the 445 lb-ft of torque). With a displacement of 401 c. i. (6572 cm3), it developed 325 bhp and a colossal 61. 4 mkg of torque. The huge 'wildcat' also powers the Invicta. It goes without saying that the Electra benefits from the most sophisticated equipment, including power-assisted brakes and steering. The (very generous) power output remained stable until 1966, although a 425 c. i. (6966 cm3) V8 was available in 1964. Offering 340 bhp, or even 360 bhp, the latter was only available as an option. The Electra 225's spacious proportions, sober styling and airy elegance at the stern give it an unmistakable majesty. While the hyperpanoramic windscreen with its S-shaped profile appears extravagant, the front grille, soberly decorated with a carpet of chrome rectangles, is positioned between the two lines of the bonnet and the bumper without any flashy effect. The style of the 1960 model was a reworking of the previous year's design. While it retains its bias, it loses some of its sharpness and rigour. It also lost some of its vigour, with the planed-down wings. The silhouette, with its rather complex contours, also looks less convincing. But the uncluttered front end remains superb despite the more orthodox horizontal position of the headlights. This example has been completely restored and is flawless.
