Description
The legendary Austin Seven captures the essence of early 20th-century motoring. Its appeal lies in its charming and compact design, which made it an affordable and practical choice for many families almost a century ago. The Chummy's lightweight build and nimble handling made it easy to drive, while its open-top design added an element of fun and freedom to the motoring experience. Today, the Austin Seven Chummy is cherished by collectors and vintage car enthusiasts for its historical significance, its quaint aesthetic, and its role in making automobile ownership accessible to the masses. This particular car, restored in the 1980s is remarkable in that it has been in a single ownership since 1965 when we understand it was purchased for just £5! There is quite a lot of correspondence in the history file relating to the re-allocation of its original registration number in 1987. It would appear to have been off road for some time and the DVLA had no record of it. The issue was resolved by the Chairman of the Austin Ex-Apprentices Association who wrote this about YH 2625 to the DVLA in July 1987:
"I have examined the above vehicle and wish to confirm that in my opinion it has been accurately restored to original condition and design and is of considerable historical value. Each detail, including colour is historically correct in accordance with the year of production except for additional rear lamps to comply with modern law requirements"
The Chummy was then re-allocated the original mark from its first registration on July 17th 1927. It spent many years and throughout the second world war in South Devon before eventually moving to Aldeburgh and Woodbridge in the Ipswich area. We have just re-commissioned the car and can confirm that it runs with superb oil pressure, a very quiet gearbox and rear axle. The older restoration has stood the test of time and in every respect the car presents well, inside and out. Arguably the most charming of open Austin Sevens, this Chummy has seen little use in recent years and is about to change ownership for the first time in six decades!
