"Before the word Superbike was even in the vocabulary of most fans he had won TT F1 world titles and Isle of Man TTs, set a Mountain Circuit lap record that lasted for seven years, and won the World Endurance Championship." - Julian Ryder on Carl Fogarty, World Superbike Winners.

Blackburn's Carl Fogarty is a legend in his own lifetime. Born on July 1st 1966, Carl made his road-race debut towards the end of the 1983 season at his local track, Aintree. Being born into a racing family undoubtedly helped Carl in his novice days, with father George, a capable short circuit and TT rider in his own right, on hand to guide and encourage the youngster. Despite his later success on superbikes, Carl at first seemed destined for a career in the 250 class, before a twice broken leg left him unable to fit comfortably on the diminutive quarter-litre racers. The enforced switch to superbikes would prove a blessing in disguise. The rest, as they say, is history.

Before commencing his immensely successful career in the World Superbike Championship, (winning the title in 1994, 1995, 1998 and 1999), Carl had won the 1988 and 1989 TT Formula 1 World Championships riding Honda RC30s, scoring his debut Isle of Man TT win in the '89 Production 750 event on the other ex-Fogarty RC30 in this sale.

On file is a letter dated 22nd October 1989 from George Fogarty to our late vendor certifying that 'E166 JBV' was the only motorcycle that Carl used in 1988 to win that year's Formula 1 World Championship and one of two used to win the 1989 Formula 1World Championship, this example being the one predominantly used. (Our late vendor purchased the RC30 from Carl Fogarty in October 1989.)

There is also a list of race results stating: "This No 4 Honda RC30 is the machine I used in the 1988 and 1989 seasons, it is fitted with full race kit for Formula 1 and TT Racing." Also on file is an V5C, old (part) V5 in Carl Fogarty's name showing that 'E166 JBV' was first registered to Vin Cunningham Motorcycles of Darwen on 30th March 1988 and to Carl on 16th April 1988. The file also contains photographs of the Honda on display on the Ferodo stand at a show.

Sponsorship stickers include those of Tony Scott Tuning, NGK, Proflex, Metzeler, Arai, Ferodo, Gemini Oil, Regina chain, Goodridge, and Winfields of Haslingden. The paintwork is original and there are remnants of a number '4' to the fairing front; there are also remnants of other numbers and evidence of old race repairs (duct tape, etc). Instrumentation is confined to a rev counter (there is no speedometer or ignition switch and a key is not required). Other notable features include Metzler slick tyres, a Micron exhaust, and a Honda rear paddock stand (to come with the machine). Also included with the lot is a large selection of race used bodywork and gold coloured rear wheel. A wonderful opportunity to own an important piece of Fogarty and Honda racing history.

Following a period of inactivity, this motorcycle will require recommissioning or possibly more extensive restoration before returning to the road and thus is sold strictly as viewed. Key not required.

All lots are sold 'as is/ where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Visit the Bonhams website for all pertinent auction information.
