We are delighted to present for sale this incredibly low mileage, high specification 1987 Land Rover 90, which has been refurbished by the John Brown 4×4 HQ team to resemble the recent 2022 110 X Dynamic HSE we recently sold in Tasman Blue. As the photos show, this is a really special truck with our highest specification ever produced – read on below.
Externally, this 90 has been painted in 2022 Land Rover Tasman Blue, which was an option for HSE Defender Models only in that year – being a circa £2000 optional extra itself alone… Wherever you look, this 90 has been upgraded for improved use – from the full LED light package including the “HALO” front headlights with Daytime Running Lights, to the new black canvas, new bumper with new end caps in Eiger Grey and Sawtooth Alloys to match, new adventure grill with Land Rover badging, black rock sliders down the sills, new number plates, etc etc. Cooper Discoverer STT Pro tyres have been fitted to give a butch stance. We think the photos do the talking here – in our opinion, this is one of the coolest Land Rover 90 builds we’ve ever done.
Perhaps where it stands out most from our previous builds at HQ is inside though – we have, in the past, had many customers who have wanted an Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto Solution, and we are now able to fit a central touch screen, with both systems enabled. It is super simple to use – hook your phone up via WiFi or Bluetooth, and you are good to go – no more motorised poorly made screens, no more sat navs on the windscreen – it is all here, in one easy to use package, and you can take calls and charge your phone using the USB and 12v connections too. We cannot explain profoundly enough what a true difference this makes to the experience – 21st Century motoring in a 37 year old Land Rover!
There are a pair of deluxe highback outer seats, which are adjustable for comfort and have 3 point over the shoulder belts thanks to the seat belt bar – just like a modern car, pull your belt, plug in and you are good to go. The cubby box provides an area to stow items out of sight, and acts as a “bass port” for the stereo system, which gives a far superior sound to every other cost-effective solution we’ve used. The rear houses twin bench seats with a load mat to the floor area and some sound deadening to minimise cabin intrusion – meaning seating for six people including the driver.
So – why would you go for this 90 over a more modern equivalent vehicle like a later Defender XS? There are three reasons – the first being road tax. This has a very reasonable road tax category – any Defender XS post 2001 attracts a cost of £760 per year. This is less than half that, and in two years, it’ll be exempt and free from road tax entirely. It’ll also be free from MOT in two years, removing another yearly hassle and making it ideal if you are leaving it at a holiday home or abroad for longer periods, as it can all be done online remotely.
The third reason though, is the super low mileage, rugged diesel engine – this was the military’s favourite unit – and with good reason. This one is barely run in at just 51, 000 miles – but they’re good for astronomical mileages without problems – we’ve seen them with mileages well north of 300, 000 and they’ve had just regular servicing… incredible. They’re completely non-OBD – meaning there are no computers at all – just good, old fashioned mechanical engineering that one can do at home, or any old school garage can do very inexpensively. It is true they are not the fastest unit – they’re perfectly fine up to the National UK Speed limits, and in truth, that is about where they’re easiest to drive anyway – and the benefits of a non-turbo unit mean less complications in maintaining them – and you are sacrificing top end speed for an engine which will outlive the equivalent TD5 or TDCI units without any trouble whatsoever.
For the above reasons, these 90s are becoming hot property – it is a soon to be MOT and Tax Exempt 90 which looks like a 2015 style Defender, with coil springs, five speed synchro gearbox, disc brakes, etc etc – they drive like a modern car, but without the modern hassle of computerisation – many then point to the antiquated interior as the reason to “go modern” but this has been addressed here too! This is as close as one can get to having the best of both worlds – and we are finding throughout the market of all 1980s classics values are increasing for the reasons above… there are many mid-1980s cars with coil springs, fuel injection, disc brakes etc one could easily daily drive if they wished, and these Land Rovers are falling into that category. They’re even ULEZ and Congestion Charge exempt once they’re Historic tax class on their 40th birthday – unbelievable.
In summary then, if you are looking for a Classic Land Rover or maybe an even more modern Defender with the creature comforts you are used to, such as CarPlay or Android Auto, 3 point seat belts, Stereo and Speakers, USB Charging, Bluetooth – then this could be a great option, and in a few years, it’ll cost almost nothing yearly to run (other than servicing and repair) thanks to MOT and Tax Exemption. People are realising that with the recent road tax hikes, the improved tech of the mid 1980s cars and the love of Classic Motoring that they want to get away from having their hard-earned taken away from them when they accidentally stray into the City Limits, or having to pay close to £1000 for road tax on a 20 year old car!
