- The E30 was produced in many more variants than the previous BMW E21, which was only offered with two doors. The second 3 Series was launched at the end of 1982 and was also available in a four-door version from September 1983. In the autumn of 1985 - 670, 000 E30s had already been sold by August 1985 - the full convertible (without roll bar) and the first M3 were presented. The small 324d entered the BMW range in 1985 as BMW's second diesel car, following the 5 Series 524td diesel model presented in 1983. For the major facelift in September 1987, an estate variant followed with the Touring name, which had already been used for the BMW 02 hatchback. This estate variant of the E30 was designed by a BMW engineer who found his 323i E30 Saloon too small for him and his family. So he decided to add a hatchback and proposed the idea to BMW, who loved it and decided to market the model based on the E30 phase 2 from 1987.
