YOU ARE looking at the one and only remaining Morris Six (MS) Police car in the world. Yes, you read correctly. The world!
MAB 170 was registered in 1953 and was used, from new, as the mode of transport for the Chief Constable of Staffordshire Police Force. It was "his car" until 1958 when he retired and his chauffeur purchased the car for sentimental reasons. He had been the driver from new. Anyway, he never drove it again and it was garaged for 28 years until his widow decided to sell. It had covered 44, 000 miles when it was tucked away. Now, following its first MoT in 1989, it has covered 59, 000 and so has been used sparingly and mainly on runs to classic car shows and Police events.
I can just picture Jack Hawkins sitting in the rear seat, clad in raincoat and trilby and puffing on his pipe. "Chummy won't get away with this latest bank job. Step on it and let's start rounding up the usual suspects!"
So, in essence, three former keepers. The Police, the chauffeur and the purchase in 1986.
Someone has been in touch with me since I listed this beauty and given me some great info about knowing the chauffeur personally and being taught advanced driving by him. There is so much history with this car!
This magnificent Morris, with its straight six ohv engine, simply purrs. There is the most fantastic history file which includes all sorts of information on this amazing car and I could not - even if I wanted to - cram all that info into this advert.
Confirmation of it being a Police car from new comes at you from all angles once you settle down to read articles, letters and newspaper articles etc. The evidence (pardon the Police analogy) is irrefutable!
Anyway back to the vehicle itself. The Wolseley 6/ 80 was the "go to" make and model for British Police Forces soon after the war, and only 11 Morris Sixes (the Wolseley's sister car) were ordered by the Police. Ten have since been scrapped leaving MAB 170 as the only survivor not only in the UK, but in the world.

Naturally, she was re-commissioned after emerging from hibernation, although not restored. It did not need restoration. It was so strong and solid and needed little in the way of external cosmetic work. All necessary engine components were diligently sourced and she was up and on the road. Her panels were superb and the black paintwork simply gleams. Interior-wise, it is difficult to believe that you are looking at a 72-year-old car. The original red leather is in a condition that will probably astound you while the rest including door cards, head lining and the magnificent gold dash and dials are all original.
Then there is the original Police radio set with telephone. Yes a proper telephone. The aerial on the roof screws off and can be tucked away in a safe place. There is so much more to say about this extraordinary survivor but, for now, than can remain in the car's amazing history file ready for the new owner to read and digest.
