Description

For sale, THROUGH JOHN BROWN 4X4 LTD, Land Rover Series 2a Ragtop in Light Pastel Green (1962).

Petrol 2286cc. MOT & Tax Exempt. Weber Carburettor. Early Dateless Registration. Free Wheeling Hubs. Bonnet Mounted Spare. Deluxe Bonnet. Deluxe Interior, including Deluxe Seats. Recent Canvas. Wing Top Mounted Mirrors.

We are delighted to present for sale this early 1962 Series 2a Land Rover, finished in the Light Pastel Green colour scheme with Limestone wheels and Sand Canvas. It is great to see this particular example still retains its original dateless registration plate, on the correct black and silver vintage numberplates.

Externally, as the photos show, this Series 2a is in good order – the paintwork is a spray type finish to a good standard, and there are lots of period features… from the vintage plates to the deluxe bonnet, bonnet mounted spare, rear grab handles, wing top mounted mirrors – etc etc. We’ve rolled the sides of the recent canvas up for the photos – this for us is the best format as it allows “wind in the hair” motoring without the loss of the top of the canvas, should you get caught in a British autumnal shower! We’re sure a prospective new owner will agree with our assessment at HQ that this particular Series just looks right and exactly as it should – no overzealous added extras, just vintage motoring at its very best.

The front of the interior benefits from deluxe trim – with deluxe seats, deluxe matting to the footwells and deluxe trim to the bottom of the doors for that premium feel. It is nice to note that the upgraded “linked” wiper system is fitted – meaning the wipers not only clear water from the screen much quicker, but also that they work in sync – a nice touch. The rear is unfitted except for a rear mat as the photos show – if you are looking for a pair of rear benches back here to allow for seven occupants including the driver, we can do this for £595. Tailgate chain covers are fitted to stop these rattling against the bodywork when driving, which is a nice touch too.

Out on the road, this Series 2a drives exactly as one would expect – with a set of cross climate, road biased tyres, road holding is much improved and they are larger than standard too, which gives superior gearing and a lower engine tone whilst cruising. Free Wheeling Hubs protect against diff and axle wear, as well as giving as much fuel economy as possible in the period set up. The added bonus of an uprated Weber carburettor means superior performance over standard, which is most welcome when getting up to speed. Our test route, as readers will know, takes in every kind of road – and that includes straight through the middle of the market square in Thirsk – and we got lots of waves and smiles whilst waiting for the lights to change to green, thanks to that colour scheme!

In summary then, if you are looking for an early Series 2a Land Rover which benefits from MOT & Tax Exemption as well as classic insurance, this has to be worth considering. This really is just an “as it should be” Land Rover, which gets back to exactly as the factory intended… and we’ve really enjoyed driving and preparing this one for sale – it gets us back to the real and authentic driving experience, and reminds us why we love these Series Land Rovers so much!
