Dutch head turner
Back in the day—we're talking about a 1977 model here—an Alfa Romeo Montreal was already a very special car. It's safe to say that many dealers back then never sold this Milanese flagship model, sticking with the equally beautiful Alfetta. A total of only 3925 Montreals were produced between 1970 and 1977. A low enough number to be considered exclusive today. It's a real head-turner to spot something so beautiful among all the gray, standard-issue cars. The recently deceased designer Marcello Gandini, then working at Carrosseria Bertone, was responsible for the fantastic lines. This man truly knew what beauty was, as the Lamborghini Miura, the futuristic Countach, and the iconic Lancia Stratos were also created on his drawing board.
How wonderful it is that such beautiful examples have been preserved. Most have now been restored and are cherished by enthusiasts who want to keep this piece of Italian automotive history running at all costs so that everyone can enjoy it. And that enjoyment shouldn't be so difficult, we think, because the aforementioned design is always stunningly beautiful, no matter from which angle you view the car. And then there's the beautiful details, such as the retractable "eyelashes" over the headlights, the louvers behind the doors (which, incidentally, still have a hint of Miura design), or the unique all-glass tailgate. And then there's the technology: an Alfa Romeo engine is always a masterpiece, but a V-8 DOHC with fuel injection, derived directly from the famous Tipo 33 race car, is a true gem. Wonderfully smooth, all-aluminum, 4 camshafts, and plenty of power for such a relatively light car. In this case, the engine has also been overhauled, and of course, photos were taken of this. This V-8 is coupled to a wonderfully shifting 5-speed transmission. It takes some getting used to the shift pattern, as it's a so-called "dog-leg" type, with 1st gear in the bottom left and 2nd gear in the bottom left. e upwards. A true "Alfist," however, quickly masters this.
The interior offers ample space for two people, and the rear seat and large trunk offer plenty of room for suitcases and bags. A truly delightful Alfa for touring on fast, winding back roads.
This Alfa Romeo Montreal was originally delivered in the Netherlands and registered on March 13, 1977. There are three known owners, and the second owner certainly invested significantly in bringing the car to its current state. The most recent owner has once again paid particular attention to the chassis. With the work carried out, such as the correct polyurethane bushings in the suspension, Bilstein shock absorbers, Alfaholics springs, and the same stabilizer bar at the front, the Montreal's handling and roadholding are unrecognizable. Now, the car responds instantly to every steering movement, the body roll is just right, the ride height is good, and the suspension is comfortable yet communicative. That's how we like it. And actually, Alfa should have delivered the car like this back then. No matter: this Montreal now handles like we've never experienced before. And the best part is: you can't see it, so the originality hasn't been compromised.
Numerous invoices and hundreds of photos document the journey this beautiful Italian coupe has taken. A journey where the owners invested heavily and thoroughly enjoyed it. Now you can continue that enjoyment, with the understanding that you don't have to invest. Simply maintain it normally and do what this Alfa Romeo Montreal was made for: driving.
