Description
The Fiat Panda is a real icon from the 1980s. Let's start by talking about the design. Designer Gioretto Giugiaro has, after all, not earned the title “designer of the century” for nothing. Giugiaro is known, among other things, for designs such as the Lotus Esprit and the DeLorean DMC-12. Yet Giugiaro regards the Fiat Panda as his favourite project of all time.
The story of the Fiat Panda began in August 1976 when Carlo De Benedetti commissioned Giugiaro to design a new car based on a “new French-style small car”. The idea was to develop a small car with versatility for the driver, but at the same time keep the costs and weight as low as possible. Therefore the common thread of the Panda’s design is entirely focused on reducing weight and cost.
The structure of the bodyshell eventually became one of the interior views of the car, because to save costs the interior was given attention. As clearly seen at the rear of the car, the wheel arches are not recessed but now form part of the interior.
A fun fact is that all glazing panels in the Fiat Panda are flat. This wasn’t simply a design choice; flat glass is cheaper to produce. About 1. 5 million first-generation Pandas were made between 1980 and 1986. Unfortunately, relatively few Pandas from this model remain on the road. This is down to rust, but fortunately more enthusiasts are restoring these cars to good condition.
The Panda 4x4 was launched in 1983. The engine in the 4x4 models was a larger inline-four engine known from the Autobianchi A112 (965cc, 48hp @5600rpm). The 4x4 was standard with a 5-speed transmission rather than the standard 4-speed gearbox. The first gear, called the “Primino”, was developed for climbing steep hills on the road. The gearing in first is so low that it’s basically unusable on tarmac.
The Panda 4x4 is a normal front-wheel-drive car until you manually engage four-wheel drive. This is done by pulling a T-handle upwards. This powers the cardan shaft to the rear axle where a ZF “175” differential sits.
