Description

The MGC GT is a distinguished chapter in Abingdon’s proud sporting history, conceived as a grand touring evolution of the much-loved MGB and introduced in 1967 as a refined yet muscular expression of British motoring. Beneath its elegant fastback bodywork lies the formidable 2, 912cc C-Series straight-six engine, a torquey and effortless powerplant designed to deliver smooth, long-legged performance befitting a true continental tourer. Of the approximately 9, 000 MGCs produced, only around 230 examples were specified with the desirable three-speed Borg Warner automatic transmission, making such cars a rare and intriguing proposition for collectors today.

Registered on 1st June 1968, this particular MGC GT is presented in its iconic Tartan Red coachwork, beautifully complemented by a classic black interior trimmed with red piping. The combination perfectly captures the late-1960s showroom aesthetic—sporting, refined and unmistakably MG. A Heritage Certificate, issued on 23rd June 2011, accompanies the car, confirming its provenance and adding further confidence to its authenticity.

Supplied new in 1968 by Universal Motors of London—then the capital’s largest MG agent—this example benefits from a fascinating period history. Universal Motors were known for tastefully enhancing cars to encourage sales, often fitting upgrades such as Webasto roofs, suspension improvements and engine refinements. With a list price of approximately £1, 300 when new, this MGC GT represented an aspirational yet attainable grand tourer of its day.

Over the years, this car has enjoyed careful stewardship and significant sympathetic investment. Between 2008 and 2016, two previous owners undertook extensive mechanical and cosmetic improvements amounting to over £5, 000. Works included a comprehensive brake overhaul, replacement poly bushes, differential and prop shaft overhaul, a new steering rack and associated bushes, telescopic dampers, stainless steel exhaust system and new chrome bumpers. Engine enhancements included carburettor work and the addition of an aluminium rocker cover. Structurally, the car benefits from new sills and wings, followed by a full respray in its correct and striking Tartan Red. A new battery was also fitted, ensuring dependable usability.

Following 2019, with the mileage documented at 93, 800, the next custodian continued the programme of thoughtful refinement. The original Webasto roof was replaced and fully refurbished in high-quality mohair, preserving the car’s period charm while enhancing durability. Electric power steering was discreetly added, transforming low-speed manoeuvrability without detracting from the car’s character. The interior was upgraded with classic-style MG black leather seats with red piping and headrests, alongside the addition of inertia seat belts for improved safety. A Moto-Lita steering wheel and Minilite alloy wheels lend the car a purposeful yet era-correct stance, while electric ignition enhances reliability. The rev counter has been recalibrated, and the vehicle has consistently been maintained in dry storage on a battery conditioner. Invoices substantiate the documented works.

Since completion of these improvements, the car has been regularly enjoyed and has matured gracefully with careful use. It remains a member of the MG Owners’ Club and is accompanied by a pleasing history file including copies of previous V5 documents, photographs, correspondence from former owners recounting interesting chapters of its life, spare keys and an excellent MOT record supporting the mileage. In 2025 the car benefitted from a fresh MOT and service, with the mileage recorded on 7th February 2025 at 96, 316.

A rare automatic example of an already charismatic and increasingly sought-after British grand tourer, this 1968 MGC GT offers an engaging blend of six-cylinder performance, period charm and modern usability upgrades. Presented in one of MG’s most evocative colour schemes and supported by comprehensive history, it stands today as a compelling opportunity to acquire a refined and distinctive classic—equally at home gliding through town or stretching its legs on an open A-road, just as Abingdon intended.
