Description
First registered in April 1977, this striking Triumph TR7 is a beautifully presented early example of one of British Leyland’s most distinctive sports cars, finished in crisp white and offered with a comprehensive and fascinating history file that reflects both careful ownership and significant recent recommissioning.
Penned by Harris Mann and introduced during a bold era of design, the TR7 arrived as a dramatic departure from its predecessors. With its sharp wedge profile and sweeping swage line, it was famously marketed as “the shape of things to come.” While divisive at launch, time has been kind to the TR7, and today it stands as a true modern classic, admired for its individuality and increasingly sought after by collectors who appreciate its place in British motoring history.
This particular car is an early UK-market example, retaining the desirable four-speed gearbox and presented without a sunroof, preserving the clean lines of the original design. It has had eight previous owners and benefits from a well-documented history that includes original tax discs, V5 documentation, MOT records, and a collection of invoices detailing works carried out over the years. Accompanying the car are its original Triumph handbook and the coveted Triumph passport/ service book, stamped up to 15, 000 miles, along with a period sales brochure that further enhances its history.
In recent years, the car has undergone extensive mechanical attention, with a detailed handwritten log covering work completed between 2023 and 2025. This includes a thorough tune-up and replacement of key ignition components such as rotor arm, distributor cap, ignition leads, and spark plugs, alongside a new air filter and fan belt. The fuel system has been refreshed with a new filter and a professionally steam-cleaned tank, while reliability has been improved with the addition of a Powerlite high-torque starter motor. Notably, the gearbox has been reconditioned by Tom Airey, accompanied by the installation of a new clutch, ensuring the car drives as well as it presents.
Originally acquired as a partially restored example, the car has since been carefully brought back to life, with attention paid to both mechanical integrity and aesthetic authenticity. The 1998cc engine, derived from the Dolomite 1850 and enhanced for TR duty, provides eager performance and a characterful driving experience, complemented by the car’s well-balanced suspension setup. The interior has been retrimmed to original specification, featuring red seats, matching door cards, and fresh carpets, all set against a dashboard that remains remarkably well-preserved and evocative of the era’s bold design language.
Having been sold previously by Milestone Classics, this TR7 left a lasting impression, proving just how engaging and rewarding these cars can be when properly sorted. It is a vehicle that surprises and delights in equal measure, offering a blend of usability, style, and nostalgic charm that few contemporaries can match.
Now fully restored and ready to be enjoyed, this rare early TR7 represents an excellent opportunity to acquire a well-sorted example of an increasingly appreciated British classic. Whether for weekend drives, shows, or simply as an investment in a car whose time has truly come, it promises its next custodian many miles of enjoyment and a genuine connection to a fascinating chapter of automotive history.
